A Passage of Time

"One of the most agonizing problems within our human experience is that few, if any, of us live to see our fondest hopes fulfilled.  The hopes of our childhood and and the promises of our mature years are unfinished symphonies."

-- Martin Luther King, Jr.
The following excerpts were taken from an article published in the Star Tribune on Thursday, July 11, 2002:

Robert Johnson died suddenly on Saturday, July 6, 2002, at his home in Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.  He was survived by his siblings -- Everett, Maxwell, Maxine, Gertrude, Anna, and his sons -- Robert, Jr. and Lee.

Robert Johnson spent a lot of his years helping at-risk students.  He earned a master's degree in education from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis and became an assistant principal at North and South high schools in Minneapolis.  He retired from North High School in 1989.

He was raised in Duluth, Minnesota, by a single mother who had high expectations for her children.  In turn, he placed high expectations on the students he counseled.

"He was so good with kids because he understood them," said a longtime former colleague and longtime friend, Teresa Graham, a social worker.  "They were able to accept the limits he set because it was done in a kind and caring way."

Robert Johnson, Sr., was also survived by me -- his first born.  Although he didn't play a significant role in my life, I will again acknowledge his passing and extend my condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
