2007 Holiday Greetings from Our House to Yours

Matt and PSU president Graham Spanier
Matt and PSU president Graham Spanier

Another year gone already? How did that happen? Matt is a junior now at the Schreyer Honors College of Penn State University, currently majoring in Geography. He has accepted a fellowship with Young People For (YP4), which is a long-term leadership development program that identifies, engages and empowers progressive leaders to promote social change in their communities. The yearlong fellowship program for college students starts with an all-expenses-paid National Summit in Washington, D.C., and provides organizational and financial support for executing meaningful social justice work. He is still active in the College Democrats, Schreyer Honors Student Council, blogging for the Honors College, the University Choir, and Represent (Penn State's non-partisan student voting organization). He is also now a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographical Honor Society.

Sarah is a high school junior now. This summer she took a mission trip with YouthWorks! to Delbarton WV where she worked with underprivileged children. She also worked as a swimming instructor for the township Park and Recreation Department, and just took a job with the recently opened Steve and Barry’s store. She still plays the saxophone, and is taking the advanced band class that starts before school at 7am. She still loves the Marching Vikings; this year their field show was based on music from Pirates of the Caribbean. She is also in Jazz Band again this year, this year as first alto. She’s secretary for the band, and secretary for the Sign Language Club and a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society; sometimes it’s hard to get all the homework done. She is taking her second and third AP level courses this year; American History and English Language and Composition. She is also taking Latin this year via the Virtual High School program.

Sarah the junior

This school year Barbara started working full-time; or more accurately holding 2 part-time positions, which means full-time benefits. She is doing the same thing, but this year at two schools. It’s been interesting seeing how differently the two places operate.

John’s work is up in the air a bit; his plant is being sold by BAE Systems to an as-yet-unannounced buyer. Hopefully the new owners will keep things going; stay tuned for further developments.

We are still piling on the theatrical experiences. For Matt’s spring break we went to Broadway to see Company, then Sarah and Barbara went back to see Tarzan with the High School Music Department in April. Then at the end of the summer we saw Curtains, but last month after Thanksgiving we were thwarted by the stagehands strike, and did not get to use our tickets to see Jersey Boys. Instead we took in an off-Broadway show entitled Forbidden Broadway: Rude Awakening, which was a hilarious send up of many of the shows we have seen in the past few years. The last week of the year we got to see We Will Rock You, a musical based on the music of Queen, at the Canon Theatre in Toronto.

We traveled this summer to Florida, stayed in North Redington Beach on the Gulf Coast for a few days and in Orlando to visit Universal. We also got in a week in Ocean City at the Jersey shore. We just got back from a quick 4 day trip to Toronto and Niagra Falls; Detailed trip report here.

We hope you are well and happy and look forward to hearing your news. E-mail will get the quickest response. Write to us! We wish you the best for the new year!
