AUSTRALIA Ayers Rock is the biggest exposed rock in the world. Located in a remote desert, it is about 11/2 miles long and shines bright red when the sun sets. Australia's first people, the Aborigines, thought it was sacred. CANADA Quebec City is one of the city which is look alike with France even though it is stated at North America. In Quebec City we will see a high, walled fortress (the Citadel), a hotel that looks like a French castle (Chateau Frontenac), and people who speak French. In Toronto, however, English is the main language. We can get a view of that fast-growing city by going to the top of the CN Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the world. FRANCE A high point of a trip to France would be the Eiffel Tower. We get to the top of this open, cast-iron tower in four elevators, one after another. Then you can look down 1,000 feen on the beautiful city of Paris below. CANADA-UNITED STATES On the border between Canada and the United States is the famous waterfall Niagara Falls. About 20,000 bathtubs of water pour over the falls every second. We can put on a raincoat and look at the falls from an observation deck-or ride by in a boat. CHINA 2,400 years ago, workers started putting up the Great Wall. It became the world's longest structure, with a main section 2,150 miles long. It was built to keep out invaders, but it didn't stop Genghis Khan from conquering much of China in the 1200s. DENMARK One of the world's oldest and most charming amusement parks is Denmark's Tivoli Gardens. There we will find everything from a mouse circus to the world's oldest roller coaster. ECUADOR The Galapagos Islands, which belong to Ecuador, are remote islands in the Pacific Ocean, about 600 miles off South America. They are filled with wildlife (such as cormorants and penguins, giant tortoise and lizards) and odd plants. EGYPT Great Sphinx, a stone figure with a man's head and a lion's body. Carved in the desert 4,500 years ago, it's still there, despite wear and tear. Nearby are the great pyramids of ancient Egyptian pharaohs. GERMANY Though it was built in the 1800s, the mad King Ludwig II planned Neuschwanstein Castle to look just like a fairy-tale castle from the Middle Ages, complete with turrets and drawbridges. GREAT BRITAIN The regular London home of the queen of England is Buckingham Palace. When she's there a royal flag is flying. Outside you can see the Changing of the Guard. Another attraction is the Tower of London, where many famous people were jailed, tortured, and killed. The crown jewels are shown there. GREECE On the Acropolis, you will find the ruins of the Parthenon and other public buildings from ancient Athens. The remains of the buildings, some partly rebuilt, stand high on a hill overlooking the city. INDIA One of the world's biggest and richest tombs is the Taj Mahal, which took about 20,000 workers to build. A ruler of India had the Taj Mahal built for his wife after her death in 1631. IRELAND If we kiss the Blarney Stone, which is in the tower of Blarney Castle, legends say you'll be albe to throw words around and get people to agree with you-even if what you say is nonsense. ITALY The Leaning Tower of Pisa is proof that kids aren't the only ones who make mistakes. Long before it was finished, the bell tower began sinking into the soft ground and leaning to one side. Every year, it leans one twentieth of an inch more. |
