Genotypes are genetic "codes". The ones most commonly used with rabbits are the genotypes for colors. This is a list of color genotypes in rabbits. The underscore(_) means that it doesn't matter what else the rabbit carries-dominate or recessive-doesn't matter. First is listed all colors reconized in Holland Lops. At the end is a list of colors that are not yet accepted in Holland Lops, but are accepted in some other breeds. | |||||||||||||||
The Broken Gene All of these colors can be broken (white and the color) unless otherwise noted. A broken color has the gene En, solids have enen. If there are two En that match up (EnEn) then the result is a "charlie" rabbit where there is not enough color to be showable and the rabbit will be mostly white. A correct broken has the genes Enen. Charlie: EnEn Broken: Enen Solid: enen |

* In Holland Lops, there were a lot of "diluted" oranges, which were unshowable. This is caused by rufus modifires, not the dilute gene. So, now the orange and fawn are both showable, but different colors. What can be confusing about this is that they both have the exact same genotype, just the orange has more rufus modifires. The red has even more rufus modifires than the orange. So the red, orange, and fawn are all the same geneticaly just some have more rufus modifires than another. The cream is the dilute of these colors, haveing the dilute gene. The way to tell the differance is that the reds, oranges, and fawns have brown eyes, while the cream has blue-gray eyes. (hint-all true dilutes have blue-gray eyes) In other breeds the fawn is the dilute of orange and there is not a cream color. If this is confusing, please feel free to e-mail me and I'll explain it further. **These are not recognized in the broken variety. Pointed whites can also be c(h)c, but the c(h)c(h) gives them better color. |
