We where lucky that we had an excellent selection of rocks to choose from. This pallet weighed  one ton. You can use many kinds of rocks to make your pond. Some people are lucky enough to have free local supplies, just go to a field and pick them up!!! This rock is called  Roan Valley Thin Veneer. One thing to remember...the fancier the rock the more they charge!!!

After we laid  out the rock on the driveway, it's time to power wash them. This removes all the dirt from them . If you skip this step the dirt will end up in your pond. They  look much better with the dirt removed as well. You don't need a power washer ....I just happened to own one. A simple garden hose will work fine.

A closer look shows you some of the detail of the rock. It almost looks like petrified wood to me.  At this time I'm looking for a few special rocks for the waterfall. You need a large flat stone for the top to let the water run off nicely. You also need a nice flat one at the bottom for the water to fall on. This lessens the amount of ripples that the falling water creates. Water lilies like still water best. The water also has a nice sound hitting and splashing off the rock.

All the rock is moved to the back yard. I'm starting to dig the pond hole right now. I first laid out the area with string to see how the shape  looked. The size is roughly 4 feet by 8 feet. Most of the pond will be 2 feet deep. An area near the edge will be a foot deep to allow bog plants to sit on. You need to make it 2 feet deep so fish can survive the winter. I live in Ohio which is a zone 5 area. This is really about as small a pond as you can make. Almost all pond owners wish they would have made theres bigger!
