Digging the pond out...Easy to dig this out since I just put it there. I'm using the dirt I take out to form the support mound behind the waterfall. The mound will also allow for a nice planting area behind the waterfall. As you will see later this gives it much more interest.  Make sure before you dig that you call the utilities and get the underground lines marked. You can never be too safe.
OH NO!!!! I hit a sprinkler system pipe. Not the way I wanted to fill it up. I did check the utilities but forgot about the sprinkler system.... A quick run too the hardware store and the pipe was as good as new. Luckily it was right at the back edge so it didnt get in the way too bad. Let me tell ya....it was gushing out of that pipe fast!!!! My wife laughed  hard watching me run inside to shut off the water!!! She took this pic , I didn't know it till I saw them developed.
Finishing touches on the bottom. As you can see there were 3 pipes running right through this pond...how lucky can I be....Fortunately they were close enough to the edge to be ok. I am making a small area slightly deeper . This will allow for easier draining. Just put the pump in the low spot and most of the water can be removed.  The shape of the pond can now be seen. The ledge behind me is to set bog plants on.  Try to keep the sides as steep as you can, that will keep raccoons from getting in the pond. They dont like to go in unless they can feel the edge or bottom. The shape of your pond can be anything you desire. A kidney shaped pond gives a more natural look. If you're going for a more formal , look then a geometric shape is your choice.

Am I  going bald????? NAH must be the sun....
