Now I apply a layer of thick newspaper to the botom and sides. This will act as a cushion for the rubber liner. It will help prevent sharp rocks or tree roots from poking a hole in the  liner. You can also use burlap or old indoor outdoor carpet, even landscape fabric. Anything to give some cushion. They do sell a padding as well for this purpase at water garden centers. The rubber liner is 45 mill thick. You want that thickness so that it will last a long time for you. There is a controversy ongoing about whether roofing liner and pond liner are the same product. Pond liner is marketed as fish safe. Roofing liner is sold  cheaper. Although most people have no problems with the roofing liner, most experts recomend using the Pond Liner to ensure that your fish will not be harmed or killed. I have talked with the well respected water garden experts at Oakpark landscape and water garden center and they inform me they have seen some fish die offs when nothing appears to be wrong with water quality or anything else except the person used roofing liner instead of pond liner. Its best if stocking fish to use Pond safe liner.

The liner is placed in the hole now. Lots of wrinkles but don't worry. The  wrinkles smooth out as the pond is filled. Just tuck and fold them to reduce the number of wrinkles . Another reason to get the pond level is to protect the liner from the sun. Direct sun on the liner will damage it prematurely. Make sure you use a level to check the top perimeter of your pond. Prep work pays off ....it really does. Now you add water Tucking and folding the liner as you go.

Just smooth it out as you keep adding water.Place a few rocks around the edge to help hold it in place temporarily. I should tell you it's a good idea to wash the liner off before you put it in. It has a powder film on it when you get it. The cleaner you start the pond the better.
