The first layer of rocks is layed down along the edges over the liner. Use small rocks here, save the bigger, nicer ones for areas where they will show more. The exception would be the splash rock for the waterfall. Pick a large rock for that and let it hang oput over the water a few inches.
Here the liner is folded over the first layer of the front rocks. I have placed the top front layer of rock in place. As I go up the sides and back I will pull the liner up with the rock level and backfill with dirt. When I get to the hieght I want, I fold the liner over the rock just like I did with the front, then place the top layer on.
Here I got impatient and went ahead and put the pump-filter system in. The system I used is very symple. I got a 3 or 4 gallon bucket and filled it with Lava Rocks about a third of the way. I then placed the pump in and filled the rest of the bucket up with Lava rock. The flexible hose from the pump was burried up along the side and across the back. I plumbed a tee in and added some flexible lines to spread the water out over the top waterfall spill rock. |

The Lava rock acts as a biological filter. The pourous nature of it gives plenty of surface area for beneficial bacteria to live. Here I have backfilled all around the pond with dirt to hide the liner. Our first plants have been placed in the pond. You need to wait on fish for at least two weeks for the water to stabilize. |
