Making Transparent Gifs

There are many ways to make transparent gifs.  In this tutorial I will teach you to make some.  There are also other ways but these are the ways I usually use. I will teach you 2 ways in this section.  For my examples I will use this really adorable pic of Raiha.  This tutorial is based on Photoshop but if you use Paint shop Pro it will be the same way.  All you have to do for the first tutorial is flood fill and I'm sure that PSP has a lasso or freehand option too.  Some of the images are thumbnail so I can fit it on the page click on them and they will give you a better view of the picture.

Easy Way

The easiest way to make transparent gifs is to flood fill all the parts you want transparent.  Make sure to use a color that is not in the picture.

Make sure the color you used to flood fill is the foreground color.  Then you go to Files>Export>GIF89a Export...  Click OK and save your file name.

My Way (takes longer)

This way is a little more complicated and you have to have very steady hands.  This is more precise and is the way I use to make transparent gifs.

First you open the document then you click on the polygonal lasso as indicated in the picture on the right.  You trace along the lines.  You should start at a point and end on the same point.  Tip:  When using the pologonal lasso never press twice.  If yuou do all the work you just did will be deleted.
When you are dont selecting you should have a marquee around the area that you want to show.  Next you press Ctrl+C or go to Edit>Copy.

Go to the Layers Palette and Click on the button that I have my cursor on.  When you click it Layer 1 should appear.  The Click on layer 1.  Make sure it is selected.  It's selected when it's in blue.

Press the keys Ctrl+V or go to Edit> Paste.  The transparent image should appear but you won't be able to see it yet.  The layers palette should apper like the pic on the left and the blue should be slected.

Select the Backgorund layer by clicking on it and pull it into the trasn can and let go.  The background layer will be deleted and you will have a transparent gif.  The finished product will look like the gif below.
