Te Maunga Tapu (The Sacred Mountain) |
![]() |
Around the world indigenous cultures hold certain sites to be sacred. This is a picture of one of them. In Maori culture, gaeneology (whakapapa) is of great importance. Included in each person's whakapapa are sacred landmarks that help to locate that person in time with the ancestors (tipuna) and also in the place where each person belongs. Rivers, lakes and mountains as well as marae (meeting places) and tribal affiliations are part of a person's whakapapa. In some places, the mountain (maunga) is also the burial place of the tribe. I live in the Waikato, homeland of the Tainui people whose sacred mountain is Taupiri. This is a picture of that mountain--Te Maunga Tapu a Tainui. It shows Ranginui the Sky Father spreading his protection over Taupiri and Papatuanuku the Earth Mother. Ranginui wears the moko (face tattoo). Directly below him is the green of the bush of Aotearoa New Zealand. The red shows the fires that burn close to the surface of much of the land which is situated on the Pacific Rim of Fire, the giant fault line that slashes across the Pacific Ocean, far into the Northern Hemisphere. The gold of course represents the spiritual properties of the place. I have added a photograph of a corner of some of our rainforest, partly to balance the page and partly to give you a sense of the reality of the place, and especially the unique quality of our light. |
