Literature I Would Like To Teach
Ben Franklin's Autobiography

The autobiography of Ben Franklin gives the reader great insight into the mind of one of our country's best-known and eloquent statesmen.  I would like to teach this book because Ben Franklin had an amazing work ethic that serves as a great model for the youth of any generation.  One of my favorite parts of the book, for example, is when Ben's father takes him to the various shops around Boston so Ben can decide what occupation to enter.
The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson
Emily Dickinson continues to be one of my favorite poets.  Her poem "Apparently with no surprise" is one of the first poems I read by her.  Like much of her poetry, "Apparently with no surprise" takes a relatively commonplace incident and uses it to explore an important theme such as the unpredictability of life.  I would like to teach the poetry of Emily Dickinson because they show us that our everyday experiences are important and can help us to find meaning in our lives.
Farewell To Manzanar
by Jeanne Wakatsuki
Jeanne Wakatsuki is a seven-year-old Japanese-American during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent opening of the internment camps for the Japanese in the United States.  In her book, Wakatsuki describes the conditions of Manzanar Camp and the impact that it had and continues to have on her and her family.  This book can be used to teach students about an important event in U.S. history and to help answer questions such as: Why did Manzanar occur?  Could it occur again?  How did Manzanar affect Jeanne Wakatsuki and her family?  How do you think it would have affected you?
