Pompoota is located on the the flats on the east side of the Murray river, north of Murray Bridge. An agricultural training school for returned soldiers was established there during World War 1.

Arnold and Alice Sando lived in married quarters during 1919 while undergoing 12 months training. On completion they purchased a fruit growing property at Monash, in South Australia's Riverland region. They sent their possessions by paddle steamer.

 

Arnold signed a 4 page pamphlet agreeing to the 14 regulations (extract of which follows):

Under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act the Commissioner is authorised to spend money for the settlers in----
a) The clearing , fencing, draining, irrigating and general improvements of the lands leased under the act;
b) The erection of buildings on any such land;
c) The purchase of implements, stock, seeds, plants, trees and other things as may be deemed necessary for the successful occupation and cultivation of the land. A maximum of 500 pounds per settler was authorised.

Regulations:
5) Trainees shall be entitled to four gazetted holidays, with pay, namely, Kings Birthday, Good Friday, Christmas day, Commemoration day, and in addition one day per month or two Saturday mornings with pay.
