| QUICKFACT! What was Montpelier like when John Foster was a boy? |
| Oil was discovered in 1887 and the population grew from 900 people in 1890 to 5000 in 1896! With the rapid influx of roughneck well-drillers, factory workers and quarry laborers, Montpelier recorded more killings by population than any other city in the state. Money and whiskey flowed freely and street fighting was common. In 1896, Montpelier had two hotels, three banks, many general stores, 7 doctors, 3 dentists, eight industries, and one opera house. Montpelier also had the infamous reputation of having 15 saloons and 13 houses of prostitution. During this time, the Ohio Oil Company...later to be called Marathon Oil...was reported to having a million dollars a day running through their new office. That same office is now the Montpelier Community Building! |
