Beginning Folk Herbals Course A four part series in herbal extracts |

Are you interested in learning the basics of herbal care? Learn the ABC’s of using plants and herbs safely and effectively in our everyday lives to care for and maintain the health of ourselves and our families. Each day of this course will focus on a different aspect of incorporating these green allies into your life. After completing the course students will have an understanding of the different ways to utilize herbs, the difference between nourishing and tonic herbs, and a general understanding of plant constituents. All classes will be a mixture of lecture and hands – on experience. Detailed handouts will also be given out. Although each class may be taken separately, students will get the most out of each class by attending them all. Class size is limited, please register for each class at least three days prior to the class start date. There is a discount given for signing up for all four classes before March 12th. (See below for more information.) Water Extracts: Teas, Decoctions, and Infusions The first of the series, this class will start with a history of herbalism, supplies needed to get started, places to buy herbs, ethical wildcrafting, recommended books, and general terminology to help you through the course. We will then look at different methods and reasons for extracting the healing properties of plants by water. After completing this class students will be familiar with many nourishing plants and their constituents. You will learn what plants are high in calcium, which can help to ease nausea, reduce inflammation, and restore your body to a healthy balance for optimum health. Date: March 15th, 2008 Time: 9:00am - 3:00pm (Please bring a lunch) Cost: $40 - $60 Sliding Scale* Where: Twisp Oil Extracts: Lip Balms and Healing Salves In this hands-on class students will make a variety of healing salves and lip balm. We will start from the beginning with supplies needed, a step by step process of extracting with oils, and then finally transforming our oils into salves. Besides detailed handouts students will also go home with samples of what we have made that day. Date: April 5th, 2008 Time: 9:00am - 3:00pm (Please bring a lunch) Cost: $40 - $60 Sliding Scale* Where: Twisp Weeds and Local Plants as Food One of the best way to incorporate these highly nutritious plants into our lives is by simply eating them at every meal. In this class we will spend the day in the kitchen making my favorite recipes using plants like dandelion, burdock, and seaweed. Date: April 26th, 2008 Time: 9:00am - 3:00pm (Please bring a lunch) Cost: $40 - $60 Sliding Scale* Where: Twisp Alcohol & Vinegar Extracts: “Tinctures” This class will explore basic methods for making your own alcohol extracts at home. Often called tinctures, these are one of the most popular and convenient methods of extracting plant qualities. We will learn both the simpler’s method and standardized method of extracting plant alkaloids into our tinctures. Tinctures are often very expensive to buy, but easy and affordable to make in your own home. *Additional Pricing Information Each class has a sliding scale. This means that the class costs $60, however, if you are unable to afford this, then there is a discount given to as low as $40. In this way I hope to make these classes available to all who want to come. I trust that each person is able to judge their situation and pay appropriately. There is also a discount given for paying for all four classes before March 12th. The total cost then would be $150 - $200 on a sliding scale. |

Herbal Gifts Class When: Friday, December 7th, 2007 (Please pre-register before December 4th) Time: 9:00am - 3:00pm Cost: $65* Where: Twisp Just in time for the holiday gift giving season this class will explore a myriad of different gift ideas you can make using a variety of different herbs and spices. In this hands on class, students will create, sample and take home over 10 different gifts in their own gift basket. From bath salts to seaweed cookies come and explore the bounty of herbal gifts. *Class tuition includes $30 class supplies. Please bring a light lunch. |

Rose Hips Herbal Class When: October 27th Time: 1:00 - 3:00pm Cost: $20 Where: Twisp Join us as we explore the beautiful world of roses and their fruits. We will begin by learning the history and many uses of this beloved plant. The entire process of gathering and utilizing the rose hips will be explored and students will make several creations from rose hips including rose hip infused honey, rose hip syrup and rose hip vinegar. We will begin with the harvest of rose hips and end with packaging them for gifts. Come see the many gifts this plant offers us this time of year. |
