Compton cinema organs, built by the John Compton organ company of Acton, were the most prevalent of theatre organs in the UK, some 261 were installed in cinemas and theatres in the British Isles. Comptons made many fine church and concert organs too. Their cinema organs employed state of the art technology and engineering and many are still in existance today. One of the most noteable is at the " Pipes In The Peaks ", in the village of Thorpe in Derbyshire.
During the silent movie era and into the early 1930s, theatre organs were built in large numbers, in a variety of sizes, and filled the gap between a simple piano accompaniment and a full orchestra. Indeed, even when theatre owners hired orchestras to accompany silent movies, they usually also used an organ to provide relief to the orchestra, and to play for less-expensive showings.
After the development of sound movies, theatre organs were still installed to provide live music between features. After the 'golden years' during the 1930s though many were scrapped, or sold to churches, private homes, museums, ice rinks, Garage owners, Golf clubs and restaurants (especially pizzerias). In that era, many of the tonal characteristics of theatre organs became somewhat more exaggerated than they had been in the silent movie era.
In the UK there are many theatre organs still to be heard but only a handful are in their original location.
Such instruments were typically built to provide the greatest possible variety of timbres with the fewest possible pipes, and often had pianos and other percussion instruments built in, as well as a variety of sound effects.
Many organ builders supplied instruments to theatres. Page, Marr and Colton, Compton, Möller, Robert-Morton, Rutt, Conacher, Wurlitzer, Hilsdon, Kimball, Barton, Christie, and Hill Norman and Beard. These last two were both brand names for the same company, which specialised at the time in standardised extension organs with electro-pneumatic action, ideal for the theatre and then promoted as convenient and cost-effective for churches. In general the Christie brand was used for theatre organs, which came with contemporary styled consoles, while the firm's own name Hill Norman and Beard appeared on similar and sometimes identical pipes and actions supplied to customers seen as less frivolous, controlled by a traditional drawbar-stop console. Their standardised pipe, relay and blower packages were called unit organs, and for theatre use were augmented with percussion and other additional effects.

The Church is on several major bus routes from the City Centre and Railway Station.
The Compton Organ was originally installed at the New Windsor Theatre, Bearwood, Birmingham in 1930 and was opened by Reginald Maynard.
Originally, the specification read: Tibia Clausa, Clarinet, Vox Humana, Tuba, Diapason, Flute, Cello and Double String plus the usual traps, tonal percussions and effects.
On removal from the cinema in 1960, it was re-built and installed at The Church of the Epiphany, Lymer Road in Oxley near Wolverhampton. The percussions and effects were removed. The String section was reduced to Viole and Viole Celeste and the Vox Humana was removed. This made the specification; Tibia Clausa, Clarinet, Tuba, Diapason, Flute, Viole and Viole Celeste which is how it stands today. Tremulants were kept on the Flute, Viole and Celeste and a separate one in the Solo chamber on the Clarinet. The pipework was installed in two narrow chambers behind the Altar and speaks out through two shutters on either side. The grills can be seen in the photograph above.
In the early 1990's four theatre organ concerts were presented featuring, amongst others, Doreen Chadwick. A tremulant was fitted to the Tibia at this time but was later removed.
In early 2004, Steve Tovey approached the Church to see if the organ was still in use. Unfortunately, the organ was in a bad state of repair after the organ builders ceased to trade. No funds were available, so the organ became unreliable. The generator had broken and so the action was struggling on a 12 volt car battery. Steve Tovey and Cameron Lloyd have spent many hours on the organ to bring it back into use, tuning, repairing and generally giving the 'old girl' some much needed TLC! The bass section of the Diapason (Diaphone) had long been disconncted due to a split leather inside the chest. This has now been rectified. A loaned Compton tremulant is installed on the Tibia rank for theatre concerts but is removed afterwards.

GRANADA
TOOTING WURLITZER
The most famous of Granada`s broadcasting theatre organs, although still playable, has not been heard by the general public for many years.
It does however remain safely entombed beneath the floor of the Gala Bingo Club.
Following years of negotiation, the UK chapter of The American Theatre Organ Society and the Cinema Theatre Association has received agreement in principal from the management of Gala Bingo for the current stage area to be reformed.
The objectives are:-
to allow the Wurlitzer console to rise again - for the sound of the organ to be projected into the theatre - and of course, for spectacular concerts by international stars.
The project has been budgeted at £ 40,000 and the Gala organisation, who operate the building, are prepared to allow work to proceed with the aid of funding from the private sector.
Further information on how you can help with this is available from ;
