Description; Ah, Iron Man with a bit of Kurosawa thrown in! Samurai Iron Man is about 5" tall and had a solid amount of articulation. The entire figure is painted in turcoise and black with silver high-lights. The removable armor comes in the form of large shoulder pieces, chest, back, and side plates, long shin/thigh guards, and large gauntlets. The gauntlets have removable 'swords' with extend over the wrist and fist of the figure. A pair of giant, removable blades are also built into the figures back. |

Ah, good old Shell-head. I've always had a soft-spot for the guy, harkening back to my days as an engineering student thinking 'Ya know, we GOTTA build that.' And what was not to like? Kicking serious butt of the likes of the Titanium Man and even the Hulk a few times, babes galore! But the best part were the gadgets and technology that James Bond and Q would drool over; the SHIELD helicarrier, a ton o' armored villains, and guns, guns, guns. But they key was Iron Man's armor, which ranged from the massive space armor to the sleek, black stealth model. The brief cartoon series wasn't the best, but the toy line did a good job of capturing the multitude of armor types IM wore. One of my favorites, along with the hologram armor, is the Samurai Armor! Ok, ok, so it's not practical, it's still cooooool! Meat and potatoes, like the rest of the line, were very good on this piece. This is vintage ToyBiz, so the sculpt and articulation were very good. Sure, not as good as Marvel Legends, but this piece is about 10 years old, so having elbows and knees in a 5" figure is a big deal. The sculpting on the figure is very solid, replicating the panel lines you expect from Shell-head's powered armor. The paint on the figure is a nice turquoise and black. Not the usual colors, but this does give the figure that jade-dragon look. Ah, but the main thing is the armor! What wonderful perks! It is removable, adding play value to the piece. Samurai armor? Well, if I recall what was written on the blister pack, this armor was designed to fight the dragon Fing-Fang-Foom. Personally it would be better to just use a tactical nuke, but since we're sticking with the dragon-slaying theme, might as well go with a knight in armor. In this case, since it's an Asian dragon, let's go with samurai armor. Oh well, the armor comes in parts for the chest, back, shoulders, wrists, and shins, and all piece are removable. Everything is painted in turquoise and silver, and the sculpting on the armor is also very well done. On top of that, the wrist guards have removable 'swords' built into them, and mounted on the back of the armor are additional 'blades' as well. Woohoo! Homer factor is high for me. Yes, I'm an Iron Man geek, but these figures were well done to begin with and foreshadowed the amazing work ToyBiz would do for Marvel characters in the near future. The end result is an awesome looking Iron Man figure. Sure, it's not practical, but IM always had cool looking gear, and this is as cool as it gets. |
