Ramblin' Man
Movie Ramblin'; War of the Worlds, Josh Friedman and David Koepp, Steven Spielberg
Back to p. 1

Aaaaahhhhnald is a perfect example.  No matter what, it's hard not to see the Austrian Adonis in the character he's playing.  In 'Total Recall', which was a fine film and Aaaaahhhhnald did a good job, he is NOT Joe Average, 'cuz Joe Average don't look like that!  Same with Cruise.  Every moment he smiles in 'WOTW' with his perfect, straight, white teeth... it's Tom.  He does the best he can with dialog, and there's a very touching moment where he's trying to sing a lullaby to Dakota Fanning.  However, his persona overwhelms the character he's trying to portray.  I wish Bruce Willis had a shot at this, because he would be perfect; everyman stuck into hell.

In the end, warts and all, this is a movie definitely worth catching on the big screen.  The effects and story are fun, and it's great to see Spielberg do a film that isn't as weighty as 'Saving Private Ryan'.  On the other hand, if you're looking for The Next Great Disaster Movie... well... not quite.
