EVA 1 Extras-
Neon Genesis Evangelion, Kaiyodo
Meat and Potatoes; 5.0
Perks; 5.0
Homer Factor;5.0
Description; super-robots meets techo-organic technology.

The figure is roughly 7" tall, mostly purple with black and green hi-lights.  Rather then the standard blocky appearance, EVA-1 looks like a a skeletal, insect-like  monster; the figure's torso is composed of sections like an insectss exoskeleton, the arms and legs are long and spidery, and the figures head has a frightening, tooth-filled mouth ready to roar... or bite your head off.

The piece comes with a huge assortment of accessories; a sword, knife, multiple fire-arms, and about 8 hands that let the figure hold all of these pieces.

Ok, I admit it, I'm one of the few people who hasn't seen all of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion.'(For those of you who aren't familiar with it.... oh, forget it.  Waaaaaay too complicated.  Put it this way, lots of robots, lots of disfunctional families, and apparently tons of whacked Biblical references)  I saw the first episode, but I couldn't get into it.  The setting and plot sounded neat, although the father-son tension has been done to death, and the mechs and Angels were cool.  Still, it never grabbed me the way 'Gunbuster' or 'Hades Project; Zeorymer' did.  Oh well, save me from buying 20 tapes at $30 a pop.  Now the toys, that's another story.  Assorted EVAs have been making appearances in US stores over the last few years, and most have displayed stunning workmanship, lots of detail and articulation, and cool accessories.  Recently, Kaiyodo released a 7" version of the EVA-1 which is to die for.  Ok, so I didn't get into the anime series.  The toy still rocks.

The meat and potatoes are excellent, although rather quirky.  Specifically, the articulation takes getting used to.  I'm accustomed to regular shoulder joints rotating clockewise and counter-clockwise, elbows bending up and down.  The EVA is different; the elbows bend along a diagonal joint, and the arms also rotate, simlar to the way the arms rotated on the Star Trek figures from Playmates.  Although this configuration threw me off for a bit, the odd position of the joints makes it possible to do many neat poses, such as holding a katana in both hands and holding a rifle in a sniper position.  The sculpting on this figure is over the top.  The piece is incredibly detailed, capturing the rather disturbing combination of high tehchnology and animal fury in the figure.

The perks are amazing.  There are six extra hands, a pistol and spare clip, a rifle, a large flame-thrower, a giant sniper rifle, a knife, and a katana.  All the accessories are well sculpted and fit very well into the EVAs extra hands.  All of this is placed in blister packaging displayed in a gigantic box.  The box is much, much larger then necessary, but the packaging does a nice job of displaying every accesssroy available to the EVA, and also shows the EVA itself in a sinister, crouched pose.

The Homer factor for this figure wasn't very high for me at first.  Although the figure was obviously well done looking at the package, I wasn't really a  huge fan of the series so I just passed on the figure.  However, after picking this up, displaying it, and messing with it, the Homer factor shot up like a rocket; great work with lots of accessories leads to huge Homer factor.

In the end, this toy is an excellent piece of work.  Ok, so I don't know why this thing has a sniper-rifle with tank tracks on it.  Who cares, it's an awesome toy that any collector could enjoy... and you don't have to spend $600 bucks on the OVA series to enjoy it.
