Movies are STILL WORTH SEEING IN THE THEATER! One trend that has scared the pants off of Hollywood is the dwindling number of people watching movies. You're scratching your head right now as you see how much 'Star Wars', 'Batman Begins', and 'War of the Worlds' have made, but it's the truth. The NUMBER OF PEOPLE going to movies has averaged a 4% drop each year for a number of years. There are a ton o' obvious reasons; cost, theaters can suck, people make noise, blah, blah, blah. Ah, but there are still those of us who brave the lines, over-priced concessions, and idiotic patrons, to see a movie! Are we masochists? Well that's ANOTHER question, but there are still a lot of reasons to see stuff on the big screen. `. IT'S A FREAKING HUGE SCREEN! Sure, sure, some people have projection TVs or big-screen 52?" plasma TVs. Guess what, NONE of them match the majesty of a biiiiiiig movie screen. Case in point is the cavalry charge by Theoden's forces in 'Return of the King'. Sure, you can have a 'big' screen TV, but NOTHING matches the majesty of seeing that on a full-sized movie screen. 2. Movie previews. Ok, so you have to wade through those stupid, annoying movie commercials before the good stuff. Aaaaagggghhhhhhhh! But the joy of seeing a movie preview, the first peeks at something, that's something special. Yeah, yeah, you can watch it on-line... after waiting a long time for it to load, then hoping the screen is big enough for you to see everything. You get the first peak at something cool on a BIG screen. Sweet! 3. Popcorn. The stuff at the theater always seems better. 4. It's An Event! Sure, you can do your own screening when you get the DVD. However there's nothing like being in line at midnight with other fans swapping stories, looking at costumes, and just bonding. Yes, for the mundanes out there you're scratching your head and trying to figure out why the heck anyone would want to stay up that late to watch a movie. This is an opportunity to be with people who enjoy what you do and share the same sense of camaraderie. |
