Summer Movie Moments 2002 Ok, the bubble-gum-see-explosions-and-special-effects-so-your-brain-is-mush movie season is over. Well... at least until the holiday season starts and the latest Bond flick opens. Anyway, what was good/bad/reeeeeeeal crappy? 1. Ah, let The Franchise begin; so, how many Spidey-flicks can Tobey Maguire make before he goes 'Ya know, I'm really tired of kissing Kirsten Dunst.' ... ok, not likely, but we can safely say 'Spider-Man' is on the way to becoming the next MEGA-franchise. A ton o' cool villains (Electro, Mysterio, Rhino, Venom...) to pick from and enough mythology from the comic-books (Peter and MJ being married, WE'RE GOING TO AVOID THE CLONE CRAP) give Sam Raimi and company a number of wonderful options that will avoid the problems Batman ran into.(Um... plot... plot... hey, we'll stick Aaahhhhhhnald and Uma in villain suits and have them beat-up George Clooney!!!) 2. George... George... pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease. Yes, 'Attack of the Clones' was better then Ep 1, no question. Still, there's something very wooden about the entire movie. Ep 3-5 had a sense of fun and energy, but these, it's like watching a very bad '30s drama; everyone's very formal and looks like if they smile too much, they'll crack like granite or something. Bless Christopher Lee for adding a corny-but-fun villain to the mix. Hey, anyone over 70 who can kick Jedi ass like that deserves props. 3. M. NIGHT M NIGHT M NIGHT!!!! No, I'm not jumping on the 'OMG, he's the next Spielberg!!!' bandwagon. However, it's very, very, very refreshing to see a young director who enjoys telling a story without a bagillion explosions, fancy camera angles, and bodacious, scantily clad babes. He takes his time to tell a story, at a nice pace to make you PAY ATTENTION. Ok, ok, so sometimes it's a bit too slow, but still, for the sound-bite generation, GET OVER IT. 5. My Big Fat Greek WALLET. I feel like one of the few people on this planet who hasn't seen 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding.' I've heard friends gush and guffaw about this flick, though. Hey, kudos for making a movie without explosions, without woman who are six 3 1/2 in bikinis, put it out during the summer, and PEOPLE LOVE IT!!!! Hey, memo to all the suits in Hollywood; wanna make lots of money off of a movie? JUST MAKE A GOOD MOVIE!!!! |
