Ah yes, it's that wonderful time for toy collectors; the NY Toy Fair!!!!! Ok, unfortunately, this event isn't THE be all, see all it used to be.(The San Diego Comic Convention is also becoming an important launching point for companies.) Still, the NY Toy Fair is still big. Just a few observations from last weeks events. Spawn figures; more fun stuff in general from Todd and crew. The Samurai Wars figures look stunning. Just when you thought they couldn't come up with another twist on the figures, guess again. Gorgeous detail in the sculpt and the painting combined with a great alternative vision of Spawn in ancient Japan. However, the second line of the classic figures is getting a little old. The first time it was done was neat; nice new sculpts of the Al Simmon's Spawn, Clown and crew. However, do we REALLY need another version? Guys, Hasbro lived and died by doing this to Batman figures and we all know how that's going. Please stop while you're ahead. Interlink Figures; FINALLY... but.... When they were first announce, I was really looking foward to them; Spawn meets Voltron. Then I was talking to someone about the figures, and they said they weren't interested because the merged figure looked like a giant junk pile. As I look at the promos again... well... it sort of DOES look like a big freaking junk-pile. Oh well, we'll see. Transformers; that very loud scream you heard was the scream of thousands of Transfomers fans who just spend a ton o' money on Transformer; Car Robots for nothing. When word started to float around about Robots in Disguise, I waited with baited breath for new, neat product. Then, I saw the promo shots... and saw Super Fire Convoy with a price point of HALF of what I paid for..... AAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHH. From Hasbro's stand-point, this is logical; it's neat product, they have the licence anyway, might as well just repackage it and rake the green-backs in. Ok, I've vented. Good news is a lot of collectors who didn't feel like shelling out $100 and up for some of the pieces finally get their shot. Gundam; Bandai finally put out Gundam toys in force and IT'S ABOUT TIME. Bad news is that most of the pieces are re-packacked Mobile Suit in Action pieces. Nonetheless, it's good to see Bandai release Gundam toys en masse in the US, and none of this 'we'll just put out a trickle and we'll see if we want to make more.' Trust us, they will sell. Star Wars; ok, more like 'What Star Wars?' Yes, there were a few pieces out, and Hasbro did display busts for figures from Episode 2, but there didn't seem a whole lot there. Hopefully, this means NEXT YEARS display will be reeeeeally impressive for the release of Episode 2. The Matrix toys; bad news is we're getting into a Batman rutt. How many different versions of Neo can you release before people get bored with it? Godd news is the versions being released are based on what actually appeared in the movie. No urban-assault Neo with capture-net action. N2 has Neo and Morpheus in dojo gear, along with a number of other neat looking pieces from the movie. Hardened; 'hardened?' This is a new line from N2 toys, which looks pretty cool. Keeping within the action-movie genere, N2 is releasing a figure of Sly Stallone from 'Rambo; First Blood Part 2' and Steven Segal from 'Above the Law.' Considering the great work N2 put into the Mad Max and Matrix figures, these look very promising. Word is they're considering a John McLain figure from 'Die Hard.' Yipee kaiyah!!! Mummy II; ah, I stand corrected, the movie license isn't dead yet These figures look much better then the ones from the first movie. This line is being done by JAKKS, of WWF figures fame, and that does show. The figures exhibit great detail in the sculpts. And to top it all off, The Rock is part of the line as the Scorpion King. Insert your favorite Rock quote here. Tomb Raider; Play Mates is releasing a series of figures based upon the Angelina Jolie film. The figures look.... ok. The articulation looks fine, and sculpts are ok... but compared to the work done on the Mummy II figures, well, they don't stick out, either. And no, this isn't EVERYTHING at the Toy Fair. There was also a ton o' stuff for other licenses, such as Harry Potter, Ozmosis Jones, McFarlane Toys new sports lines, and much, much, more. This is just some high-lights of the new stuff for this coming year. Same your quarters, fan-boys/girls. |
