Text Box: Israel Outrage

By: Jeff Brodovsky

Hi, I am Jeff Brodovsky, a chapter general board member. I want your help in publishing media (TV, Radio, and Newspaper) biases against Israel. For example, a few weeks ago, Wolf Blitzer, a host on CNN, was given a suicide bombing incident to discuss. Wolf Blitzer started by saying “Did the suicide bombing occur near that controversial fence?”. Before the reporter has a chance to answer, the screen changed to a fly-over of the building of the wall. The reporter finally responded, “No Wolf, the bombing occurred far away from the fence”.   Mr. Blitzer then went on to grill the reporter on the Palestinian’s reaction to the fence, completely ignoring the matter that a mad went into a populated center and Blew himself up! That is the mentality that Israelis have to fight, and our media does NOT help the situation. In fact, they help our enemies! So, if you have any media offense against Israel, e-mail me at lycanthrop23@aol.com.

Pilgrimage

By: Miriam Roth

As I sat on a plane flying from New York back home to Sacramento after participating in USY Spain/Israel Pilgrimage, I remember thinking to myself, “I am never going to forget this experience”. Indeed, the first couple of weeks I h\spent back at home, once I finished catching up on sleep and unpacking, were spent frantically typing on instant massager, moping around the house, and accumulating the biggest phone bill in the history of the world. I was consumed by missing Israel, my new friends, the fun times, even something I thought I could never miss: praying three times a day! However, time went on and I began to move on with my normal life, starting to accept the fact that my summer was finally over.        Now, about two and a half months since I stepped off that plane back in Sacramento, my life has definitely returned to normal; like many USYers, I am finding myself overloaded with schoolwork, worrying about SATs, and preoccupied with other activities. I no longer talk to my Pilgrimage friends every day, nor do I look through my pictures every night. Still, I am finding that the thought I had on the plane was really true. Even now, as the summer is growing farther and farther away, I don’t doubt that I will ever forget it. How could I ever forget the sound of 50 singing voices reverberating off the 600-year-old walls of the only remaining synagogue in Toledo, Spain? Or the breathtaking feeling of opening my eyes and seeing the kotel for the first time? How could I forget the vision of a USY pilgrim davening Shacharit in a tallit and teffilin, a dark silhouette against the light of the sun rising over Masada? The sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feelings I experienced in Spain and Israel this summer will stay with me forever. They all come together in my mind as not only a memory to look back on, but something that will continue to affect the way I choose to act, think, and observe Judaism.

Hi SUSY!

I am your 2003-2004 Membership/Kadima Vice President, Miriam Roth. I served on board as Mem/Kad last year, and I am also on regional general board on the Mem/Kad Committee. A you might guess, I love the membership aspect of USY… getting new members, making new friends, and making sure everyone is having fun at events! Last year was a great one for our membership (we exceeded our goal) and I can’t wait to make this wear even better. This summer I went on Spain/Israel Pilgrimage and had the time of my life. The experience really changed and inspired me and I made some great friends. If you want to hear storied, learn songs, see pictures or if you have any doubts regarding weather or not you should go to Israel, I am your girl! Outside of USY, I am a Junior at Rio Americano where I am active in Student Government, and in my free time I read, sleep eat, run do community service and eat some more. I look forward to another outstanding year with SUSY!

Rel/Ed

Hi!  My name is Hannah Edber, and I am your 2003-2004 SUSY Religion/Education Vice President!  I am a junior at Rio Americano High School, and in addition to USY I am part of Student Government, and I swim pretty much year-round on a team.  It was very exciting kicking off the year with some very cool High Holyday programming, from the first day of Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur; we had a blast learning about Kol Nidre and talking about themes of judgment in the Youth Lounge.    After returning from a USY Israel Pilgrimage this summer, I have so many ideas I want to share with you, to help enhance your year in USY.  There are so many beautiful services to learn, prayers to recite, and nigunim, tunes, to sing.  Whether you would like to join us for High Holyday services or become part of my Rel/Ed chapter general board committee, I really look forward to seeing you this year in USY!
