Spawn #2: Straits Violet DTM (From Straits) X Straits Violet DTF (From Straits)
Spawn Description: Male have difficulties in building a proper nest and thus have to use the nest made previously by Op-HM-M3. The male fish seems to have lost the ability to build nest maybe due to the heavy finnage. Despite serious egg-drop situation by the female, the male
fish was still able to salvage some of the eggs.
Spawning Starts: 01/12/2001
Spawn Observations: 11 Dec:
Mortality 0% - All DT
phenotype.
18 Dec: Mortality 0% 7 Jan 2001(3 weeks): Mortality 5% - Size: 15mm -
Now feed more daphnia to see if it could be the cause of micro-worms.
14 Jan 2002: Mortality 0% - Size: 10mm - 15mm
20 Jan: Mortality 0% Cull 30% - Some with
crooked spines while some are undersized and with missing ventrals.
31Jan: Mortality 30% - Only selected about 15 pcs with ventral for keep. - The rest are in community tanks. - About 20 died in poor water condition. - Total remaining: 40 pcs 16 Apr 2002: Mortality 0% Conclusion: This spawn is a failure with most fish having the missing ventrals and with spine abnormalities. Currently only left with about 10 fishes that are full size. Mostly without ventrals. Hope to breed them to see if the missing ventrals syndrome can be inherited.
(PS: Have also checked with the Straits and was told that their Straits Violet line are also not very desirable. It was mentioned that the recent spawns of Straits Violet threw out 90% females and the quality is not up to marketable standards.)
