Reports 2003 First Half Year

Report of Annual General Meeting, Friday January 24, 2003.
This is the start of another and hopefully successful year. We had only 26 persons attending our meeting, which was held on a very trying and hot day with the outside temperature at 40 degrees. I can therefore not blame anyone for staying home. However a free afternoon tea treated those that did turn up as a measure of thanks. The treasurer gave his annual report and outlined the excellent state of our finances. He is retiring from this job and replaced with a new Treasurer. The Secretary gave his annual report, which can be read or downloaded in full at the “Secretaries Report 2003” page. The President gave his final report for his term as he is also retiring. He thanked all those present for their attendances over the past 2 years. He also thanked the Treasurer, the Secretary, the Registrar, the minute Secretary and all those committee members who have been instrumental in keeping our Club running. Our Patron then installed the new committee for 2003. He also urged all members to keep meeting for as long as they can and keep our club alive for as long as possible. The death was recorded of Harold Novak, formerly Wharf Foreman Birkenhead, at the age of 92. Also of Arthur Underwood, formerly Electrical Fitter Islington, at the age of 84. And lastly of our very popular friend member Eric Cowling who died suddenly at home while working on his beloved train set. He was aged 82. We all stood in silence for one minute for the departed members.

As stated in the last meeting report we may be in for a successful year as 39 persons turned up on a glorious summer day. And the speaker for the day, Gary Mutton, proved to be an excellent choice as he is a very knowledgeable person regarding electricity. There is not much he does not know about this subject and the dangers of it. He was however tricked when one person asked him “What is electricity”. And of course that is a hard question to answer in just a few words. But he answered every other question without any hesitation. We are looking forward to his return in June with another session on the subject of “Saving energy at home”. Payments are due next meeting (February 21) for our BBQ tour to Currency Creek on March 7.

What a lovely sight it was to have two days of rain after such a long dry spell. We had 35 persons turning up today for our meeting. The speaker for the day, Andy Ahrews from TransAdelaide, talked about the safety program initiated by TransAdelaide to promote safety on railcars, busses and trams. Being an ex-bus driver himself he had lots of experience in the safety aspect of the public transport system. The death was recorded of Bill Tugwell, formerly Clerk, at the age of 86. The members stood in silence for one minute in respect of the departed member. Next meeting is a BBQ day-tour to Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island. Payments were due today but anyone wanting to come along, we still have seats available. Please let us know as soon as possible if you want to come along on our extended tour to Kangaroo Island, as there is a waiting list of extra persons who want to come along.

Report of BBQ Day-Tour to Goolwa on Friday March 7, 2003.
On a beautiful sunny morning we left right on time with one person missing. Making a detour via Kensington we picked him up and with a total of 35 persons on board we headed of along the southern freeway passing through Stirling, Aldgate, Mylor and Echunga and stopping at Meadows were we had a morning tea/coffee and comfort stop. We then proceeded through Ashbourne to the Currency Creek winery for some tastings of their wines. Arrived at the Goolwa riverfront by 12.15 pm were Kevin and Elaine set up their BBQ. A very extensive affair with so much to eat we could not consume it all. Left the water front at 2.45 pm and crossed over the new bridge to Hindmarsh Island. Some extensive development is taking place there with some very expensive homes being build. Returned to the main land and stopped at the Big Shed (used to be the Dairy Vale factory) near Mount Compass for some browsing. Proceeded along South Road via Willunga to the City arriving at the Festival Theatre by 5.00 pm. A day well enjoyed by all.

Report of Meeting held on Friday March 21, 2003.
We had 31 persons turning up again for today’s meeting. The speaker for the day, Peter Hann, told us all the inns and out’s of the Scout movement from the little ones to the full blown scouts, their Jamboree’s every 3 years and the massive organization involved in getting 30.000 scouts together in one place without losing any of them and keeping them busy with activities. Very well done. The death was recorded of Jim Flaherty, formerly Motor Lorry driver at Pt. Adelaide, at the age of 78. Also Dulcie Steele, formerly Portress, at the age of 83. Also Don Dunkerley, formerly Sub-Foreman, Islington, at the age of 77. A minute’s silence was observed for the departed members. May they rest in peace! Next fortnight’s meeting will be the last at the Renaissance Centre as it will close. Meetings from May 16 onwards will be at their new venue, the Adelaide Pavilion, in the South Parklands were the Alpine Restaurant used to be on the corner of South Terrace and King William Street. Regretfully the May 2nd meeting is therefore cancelled. Our Honour board in the Adelaide Railway station main concourse has been updated.

Because of the unexpected closure of the Renaissance Centre restaurant we were unable to hold a meeting today. A hastily arranged table at the Hotel Richmond just across the street from the Renaissance enabled the Executive Committee to get together. Surprisingly all of the committee members turned up today. Several issues were discussed but because of the noisy environment we did not think it suitable for a General meeting and this was then abandoned and all present (Approximately 25 in total) were advised that our next meeting will be at the new venue, the Adelaide Pavilion, corner King William Street and South Terrace, on May 16. Hope to see you all then.

Much to every ones surprise at this the first meeting in this new venue we had 35 persons present. And every one was very happy with the present arrangement. The good news is also that this venue is now booked to us for the rest of this year. The disappointment was that we had no speaker for the day, as all three of the scheduled speakers for the remainder of this program were unavailable for today on account of prior engagements. However at our next meeting on Monday June 23 all should be back to normal. The Secretary made lots of announcements and took up the best part of the afternoon. Several members praised him for his tireless efforts in getting us out of our predicament.

On this, the second meeting in our new Venue we had the most enjoyable meeting we have had for a long time. We had 39 persons turn up on a very cold and wintry day, which was also surprising. The speaker for the day, Alan Botting, Senior Consultant of Boomerang Travel, is very knowledgeable in the subject of “Travelling the World by Rail”. I for one did not realise so many great train journeys are still available worldwide. One can for instance travel by rail from Adelaide to Darwin (As of next February), hop across to Singapore by plane and travel the rest of the way to London by rail, apart from a short distance by coach on the Asian continent. And anywhere in Europe as well because the European rail system is very extensive. If interested in contacting him go to Shop 5, Station Arcade, Adelaide, Phone 8410 6322, or email him at sales_boomerangtravel@atlasmail.com Next Friday June 27 is our Christmas in June Day-tour when we go to Cudlee Creek and enjoy a beautiful all you can eat Turkey Dinner. Some tickets still available but they are going fast. Cost is $34 per person all-inclusive.

Report of Day-Tour held on Friday June 27, 2003.
It did not look very promising with all the rain on top of a transport strike but we still managed to have 30 persons together and departed at 10.30 am. For a change and as a bonus from Kevin we travelled via the North road to Chain of Ponds to look at the reservoirs. And despite all the rain they are all very near empty. Indeed a sorrowful sight to see at this time of the year, when they should be on their way to filling up. Went to Gumeracha for our morning coffee/tea stop by 11.30 and the sky stayed clear for the time. To Cudlee Creek for our luncheon arriving there at 12.15 pm. And no sooner were we seated the sky opened up and the rain came bucketing down. Very nice to be inside and watch it come down. Our turkey luncheon was as usual excellent. This must be the only place in Adelaide who knows how to cook turkey. Very succulent. Our usual guitarist again did the entertainment. And again much to everyone’s surprise the sky cleared up when it was time to leave at 2.30 pm. Via Lobethal, Woodside, Oakbank, Balhannah, Verdun and the Southern Freeway home to Adelaide arriving back at 3.45 pm.
