Annual Secretaries Report January 24, 2003.

Another year has gone by and again I am still sitting here. Despite our efforts to find a replacement for me, I have again been talked into staying on. This will be my fifth year. And as I will be turning 75 this year it is time for me to retire from this job at the end of this year if not sooner. Anyone thinking about it I will be giving any help needed and I can still do the paperwork and look after our Internet site. Sort of like an assistant secretary. But I would very much like to be relieved of the main secretary responsibility. Besides with the upcoming first grandchild due next Easter Saturday I will be having less time to spare.
Regarding the facts and figures of last year’s attendances at our meetings. We had 862 attendances at 26 meetings and activities for an average of 34. This compares with 877 the previous year, down 17, at 25 meetings, and an average of 35, down 1. Considering the falling membership I consider this an excellent performance and I must hereby thank those faithful members who so regularly attend. Members must have attended more meetings than in previous years. Our Internet site has had 416 visitors in the past year.
Regarding membership, this now stands at 358, down 32 from 390 last years. We had just 3 new members for the whole year. 16 members passed away during the year and 16 more where written of because they are no longer traceable. Some of them passed away several years ago. With this falling membership I cannot stress to highly that a greater effort is needed to obtain new members.
Regarding the years activities, the highest attended meeting was again our Christmas Lunch with 57 attending against 52 the previous year. And I believe the food and service was excellent. The lowest attended meeting here at the Renaissance and not counting tours was 30 on the 4th October. Of the total 358 membership 65 attended one or more meetings. That is down from 73 the previous year. The trip to Broken Hill must have been the highlight of the year as everyone who joined had a very good time. Contrary to what many believe, Broken Hill is not a dead town. We found so much to do and see that we did not have enough time to see it all.
Looking into the future I received a phone call from one of our members wishing to book himself in to our proposed tour to Kangaroo Island later this year regardless of cost. So whoever wants to book now is not going to be the first. And I am pleased there is some interest in this. The itinerary is still being worked on but Kevin has informed me that another of his customers also wants to go there. So it looks like he will be going there twice this year.
In an attempt to get more of our members attending I have sent out 73 programs to existing members in the hope that some will turn up. And lastly I must thank all those faithful members who turned up today despite the extreme conditions outside. As a measure of thanks the committee has a little surprise in store for all of us here a bit later today.

Has anyone any questions about this report?

      Thank you all.
