4-Day Peterborough 125 Celebration Report. Friday June 9: As everyone was on board by 9.15 am we left early with 25 persons on board and two more to pick up along the way at Smithfield making a total of 27 travellers, 14 club members and 13 c/o Eureka Tours. We arrived at Tarlee by 10.15 am for a morning cup of coffee/tea. Continued on to Burra for a light lunch of hot soup, sandwiches and cake at 12.00 o’clock. A browse around the township until 1.30 pm. The old township of Terowie, so well known by most of our travellers, was visited from 2.15 until 2.45 pm. One member’s wife was actually born here. Peterborough was entered by 3.00 pm and after a short tour around the main street we arrived at our motel, The Peterborough Motel, by 3.30 pm. Time to freshen up before the official opening at 6.00 pm in the Regional Arts Centre by the Mayoress, Ruth Whittle. Lots of finger food was available. Dinner was at the Motel at 7.00 pm. Saturday June 10: After an all you can eat breakfast at 8.00 am we boarded our coach at 9.30 am. We again went to the main street and browsed through the shops until 12 o’clock when we were taken back to the motel for a sandwich lunch. At 2.30 we again boarded the coach and went to the main street to witness the installation of a time capsule at the Memorial Bricks by the Mayoress who arrived there in a horse-drawn buggy. Many hundreds of people lined the street for this occasion. Back to the motel to dress for the official dinner at the town hall taking place at 7.00 pm. Fully booked out, 240 persons attended this event. The Brass Band also played plus a dance band and some more entertainers. The Premier, Mick Rann, gave a speech and John Evans from SA Tourism gave an impressive presentation on the old Peterborough Railways. The event did not finish until 11.30 pm. Sunday June 11: After another 8.00 am breakfast several of our group attended Church services while the coach did a tour around the local schools who were all open to visitors. All met again at the Peterborough station, were the I.P. made a special 20 minutes stop for this occasion. The full length of the station was packed with visitors. All went to SteamTown for a tour around the complex and a BBQ lunch hosted by the Peterborough Lions club. The Mayoress also opened the commemorative Dog Spike Archway and Walkway. Afterwards we travelled to the Cemetery and looked around some of the very ancient gravesites most dating back to 1890. Then travelled back to the motel again for our last Dinner. Monday June 12: Our farewells Breakfast this morning at the Town Hall at 8.00am was attended by many who have spend this memorable weekend here. Many old friends and former colleagues were present. I personally met nine persons I have worked with over the years. We said farewell to Peterborough at 9.15 am and travelled to Spalding for a morning cup of coffee/tea. Then went to Clare for lunch at Bentley’s Hotel. Travelled home to Adelaide arriving there by 3.30 pm. Indeed a memorable weekend. For further information go to www.peterborough.sa.gov.au Back |
