Reports 2006 Second  Half Year
Report of Meeting held on July 3, 2006
Julia Haska was the Speaker for the day, who talked about the Greenhouse affect and the resulting Climate change to an audience of 27 persons. The amount of pollution in the atmosphere is now the highest it has been for 300.000 years and has steadily climbed since civilization began some 10.000 years ago. The main cause has been established as transport emissions, road transport being the biggest offender. The death was recorded of Syd Tuck, formerly a metal worker at Islington at the age of 83. Also passed on is Mervin Baldwin, formerly a lenght runner at Riverton. A minute's silence was observed for the departed Members.

Christine Howard from the Commonwealth Bank who was our speaker for the day is one of the funniest and wittiest speakers we have had in a long while. She kept her audience of 30 spellbound with her subject, which was mainly about security of credit and debit cards. And the ways they can be misused are so numerous it is a subject all of its own. And she was well versed in her subject. A job so well done we would like to see her again on some future date. The death was recorded of Gerald Chandler, formerly Catalogue Officer at Recency Park at the age of 77. A minute’s silence was observed for the departed member.

The death was recorded of Jack Hazeal, formerly Personal Manager at North Adelaide, aged 82 and also of Maurice Steer, formerly a Checker, aged 85. A minute’s silence was observed for the departed Members.

Report of Meeting held on August 14, 2006
With an audience of 38 persons it was the highest attendance since October 2004. This was very likely because our speaker, our Member David Lee had as his subject the Former Railways Commissioner W.A.Web. It was a most interesting talk and brought back many memories of a past era. He updated a very rundown Railway system with new imported and locally produced locomotives and rolling stock.

Report of Meeting held on September 11, 2006
Monica McGrath who was the speaker of the day had an audience of just 24 persons. Looking at past attendances it seems as if Railway orientated topics are more popular with the members than general topics. If they were only easier to find. She gave and interesting talk on depression and had three questionnaires for us to fill in for research purposes on the subject of depression. The death was recorded of Jan Stachyra, formerly Station Master, at the age of 92. Also of Alfred Dobson six years ago, Machinist Wheel Shop, Islington aged 77. Also of Una Boddington, Wife of A.J. Boddington (Deceased) aged 86. A minute’s silence was held for the departed members.

Report of Meeting held on October 9, 2006
As usual of speaker for the day, John Evans of S.A. Tourism, everyone is astounded by the knowledge of Railway working of this person. With an audience of 33 persons he showed us many photographs of Railway Architecture, from today’s Stations to historical Railway Stations back to the 1800’s. Some very beautiful Stations are still in existence (And used), many of them heritage listed. Dedicated persons have restored many of them to their previous glory. It is always a pleasure to listen to this speaker and we have already secured another engagement of him next year. The death was recorded of Ray Guerin, formerly Station Master Port Adelaide, at the ripe old age of 96. Also Ross Lush, formerly a boilermaker at Islington, at the age of 88. A minute’s silence was held for the departed members.

Report of Day-Tour to Ardrossan on October 17, 2006
On a fairly cool day we departed on time with 25 persons and travelled non-stop to Port Wakefield for a morning cup of tea/coffee. Then toured down the Peninsula to Port Clinton for a drive along the beachfront. Next looked around the township of Price a bit further down the coast. Then took the road to Tiddy Widdy beach and followed that road along the coast to Ardrossan arriving there by 11.30am. A quick walk along the main street and it was time for our midday lunch at the Royal House Hotel. A very satisfying lunch including dessert was enjoyed by all. Then visited the Ardrossan museum, which holds a very impressive display of farm machinery manufactured in Ardrossan in the early 1900’s. Many photographs are also on display and a visit to this museum is well worth the effort. Departed Ardrossan at 2.15pm to look at the BHP lookout situated just outside the township and viewed the scenery overlooking the township and grain silos as well as the dolomite mine. Then continued on to Port Wakefield were we visited the Fish Factory. They have a very large selection of frozen fish and many purchases were made. The coach had an esky on board with ice for the purpose. Left the peninsula for the journey home and arrived in Adelaide at 4.30 pm. A day enjoyed by all.

Report of Meeting held on October 23, 2006
On a fairly warm day we had 30 persons present to listen always-popular Cliff Olds, retired train controller, speak about the famous “Tea and Sugar” train of the early part of the 1900’s. Running weekly across the Nullarbor on the mainline, it serviced all the towns and villages including the smallest of hamlets and fettlers camps with their weekly supply of food, water and necessities of life. He himself experienced a trip on this train and has never forgotten it. As all campsites and small towns are now abandoned and taken over by modern ways of maintenance the “Tea and Sugar” train has also been discontinued. Many people still have memories of this once vital service. We are hoping to see Cliff back again next year.

Report of Meeting held on November 6, 2006
Dennis McCarthy and partner Andrea of the Australian Customs Department were our speakers for the day and they talked about the Customs Hotline Program. They were aided by an extremely well put together PowerPoint display, which showed visually some of the contraband discovered by Customs on our borders. They don’t only protect airports but also all of the shipping in and out of Australia as well as all the postal import and export. All in all it is a very complicated job. With a coastline of 37.000 km Australia is one of the largest countries in the world. They cannot possibly control this big area without input from the general public. The idea of the hotline program is for the general public to report any suspicious activities anywhere in the country to their toll free number 1800 061 800, which is attended 24 hours 7day per week. Email them at information@customs.gov.au or visit their website at www.customs.gov.au

Report of Meeting held on November 20, 2006
We had 26 persons present to hear our speaker for the day, Pharmacist David Cosh, talk about medicines. His main topic was about Aspirin, which has been around now for about 300 years. And it is still so beneficial that we consume about 45.000 tonnes of it every year. That is a lot of tablets when you consider that one tablet is just 300 milligram. Even the old Bex tablets and powders consisted of Aspirin plus some other ingredients including Caffeine, which was supposed to be the pick-me-up part of Bex. He is very competent speaker who knows his subject well.
