March 8, 2004

Dear South Arkansas Soap Box Derby Drivers,

It’s time to dust off your soap box derby cars and get them ready to race in the 6th Annual South Arkansas Soap Box Derby.  The event will again be a part of El Dorado’s Fantastic Fourth Celebration and will be held Saturday, July 3rd on the same stretch of 5th street as last year.

Below are some important dates and key notes to remember.
·         You must be at least 8 years old and no older than 17 on July 3, 2004.  Note:  rules now allow 8 year olds to participate.

·         Saturday, June 19th at 9:00am, Construction Clinic – Each driver is encouraged to have his/her car constructed to bring to this construction clinic to begin at 9am at the South Arkansas Arboretum.  Drivers attending this clinic will have a big advantage over others.  We will have the starting ramp on display and available for trial runs (thanks to Great Lakes Chemical for constructing the starting ramp.).  We will also have the official electronic weighing scales there so that each driver can check his car for proper weight (note that the maximum weight of the car, with driver, is 200 pounds and the rear of the car must not weigh 15 pounds more than the front).

·         Friday, July 2nd at 6:30pm, Official Inspection and Quarantine – Each car must be inspected and quarantined the night before the race.  Inspection will begin at 6:30pm at the Hugh Goodwin Elementary School.  Drivers must bring a copy of their birth certificate to the inspection.  Cars must meet weight requirements (see official rules plus the 15 pound maximum tail weight) and be fitted with the recommended adjustable weights prior to inspection.  Drivers will receive their racing T-shirts at inspection.

·         Saturday, July 3rd at 11:00am, 6th Annual South Arkansas Soap Box Derby – The race is to begin at 11am sharp.  Each driver should arrive at least one hour early.

We have two cars without a driver.  If you have a friend that would like to drive one of these cars, please contact me as soon as you can.  First one that claims it, gets it.

Parents or friends of drivers that would like a “pit crew” t-shirt for this year’s race, please get your order in on or before June 19th to Beth Sullivan at 863-7499 (or e-mail BETHANDCHRIS@peoplepc.com).

The champion of the 6th Annual South Arkansas Soap Box Derby will receive $750 to cover his/her travel expenses to the national championship race in Akron to be held the week of July 26-31.

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW AT THIS TIME IS ARE YOU GOING TO PARTICIPATE THIS YEAR?  It is easier to communicate by e-mail, so if you have e-mail, please send me a note as soon as you can to let me know one way or the other.  If you don’t have e-mail, please give me a call.

Once I get your confirmation, I will send you a copy of the 2004 Stock Car Plans, the 2004 Spare Parts Order Form, and the 2004 Stock Division Inspection Sheet (actually you can go ahead and download all of these at www.allamericansoapboxderby.com if you want to get a head start).

Visit our local website at www.oocities.org/sarsoapboxderby to see pictures from last year.  Also, visit the new AASBD website at www.allamericansoapboxderby.com.

Happy racing,
