MATTHEW STRICKLAND, son of Levi Strickland and Mary Ann Lee, was born 1856 in Pierce County, Georgia. He married (1st) Lucy Lavada Kelly and (2nd) MARY ANN BENNETT, b. 1/13/1856, daughter of William Thomas Bennett and Jerushua Cox. Lucy may have died about 1881 while giving birth to an unknown 4th child. About 1882, Matthew married Mary Ann. This family originally lived in the Schlatterville area on land that Mary Ann had inherited from her father. By 1910 they had swapped land with another family and were living in Wayne County (part that is now Brantley), on the northeast side of where the Big and Little Satilla Rivers converge near Strickland Landing. In the 1920 cenus, Matthew and Mary Ann were shown to be still living at this location in Wayne County, which would become Brantley County in 1921. Matthew had grown timber on his land, harvested it, rafted it downriver during the high-water "freshets" and sold it at Burnt Fort sawmill, several miles downstream. His parents lived across the Satilla on the south side, where they operated Strickland Ferry and lived in the Smyrna Church area. Mary Ann died on April 16, 1932 and Matthew on November 16,1935. They are both buried at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Waynesville, GA.

GEORGE
LEE was born a son of John and Elizabeth Lee in Georgia
in 1801.He moved with his parents to Appling County, Georgia, in 1819-20, and married
there about 1823. His first wife was Polly Ann Stephens, daughter of Unknown Stephens . Two daughters, Sarah and Mary Ann, were
borne by her. He then married Miss Rebecca Griffis, born 1808, daughter of Samuel Griffis.
They had eleven children. The second wife died about 1873 and he married Miss Mary Carter,
a maiden lady, for his third wife, but there were no more children. George Lee was a
private in Captain David J. Miller's company of the Ware County Militia in 1838. He was
living in the 5th land district of Appling County, according to the list of registrants
for the 1820 state land lottery. This district is now mostly in Bacon County. He served as
a private in Captain James A. Sweat's Company, August 19-November 18, 1840. About 1830-35,
Mr. Lee moved from Appling County and located on a tract of land in Ware County where the
village of Ruskin was built in the 1870's, about four miles westwardly of where Waycross
now is. He sold out there soon after the death of his wife, Rebecca, and moved with his
third wife to a small farm on the border of the Okefenokee Swamp. He died there about
1882.

JOHN LEE, an early settler of Ware County, Georgia, was born between 1750 and 1760 in North Carolina and married and lived in Wayne County, North Carolina, until sometime about 1800 when he moved with his family to Georgia. He became among the first settlers in 1819, and is found there in the 1820 census. His wife's name was ELIZABETH, her last name is unknown. John lived in Bulloch County as early as 1798 when he bought land there. John Lee was a member in 1817 of Beard's Creek Baptist Church, Tattnall County, and in 1818 was a member of "Purchase Church" on the Satilla River in Appling County. (The church was renamed Little Satilla Baptist Church in 1819.) He was a delegate from his church to the Piedmont Baptist Association in 1817, 1818, 1819, 1820, and 1823. Data from old minutes of Piedmont Association confirm this information and also shows that the church was dissolved in 1826. In the creation of Ware County out of Appling in 1824, John Lee and family were placed in the new county. John was a Revolutionary soldier in North Carolina and drew land as such in the 1827 Land Lottery, residing at the time in Ware County. His home was originally in Bacon County, but his last few years were spent in the southern part of Ware on or near the Suwannee River where he is found in the 1830 census. He died there sometime about 1838. His son, Lewis Lee, was the administrator of John Lee's estate. Ware County records prior to 1847 having been burned, no record there is available as to the administration. However, the files of "The Southern Recorder" of Milledgeville, Georgia, show an advertisement of sale dated September 1, 1839, by Lewis Lee as Administrator, advertising the cattle of his deceased father for sale at the former's house in Ware County to be sold Saturday, November 9, 1839. The wife of his son, Lewis Lee, was Susannah Walker, daughter of Isham Walker and grand-daughter of Littleberry Walker, Sr., of Wayne County. Lewis moved from Ware to present Clinch County in the 1830's then in 1845 to Florida. They were also member of Little Satilla Baptist Church but transferred their memberships to Union Church on the Alapaha River, joining at the arm now Bethany Church in Clinch County, June 12, 1841. On September 12, 1845, they were dismissed by letter to New Hope Church in Florida.
