STUDENT AND SWORD |
VOLUME 2 ISSUE 7 Newsletter date Febuary 2001 Karate is a lifelong Pursuit: Funakoshi was now eighty years old and coming to the end of his natural life span and said about a particular karate technique that he had practised for over sixty years, "I've finally got the hang of it". It has also been said many times that even on his death bed he was running kata through his mind trying to improve on them. I don't expect students to think the way Funkoshi sensei thought about his art, or for students to think about my arts and my perception of what Budo represents to any individual. But I would like to believe that a student when taking the path of Budo he / she is prepared to put that little extra into what they are about to learn, either by way of time, hard training or respect and hopefully gain enlightenment as Funakoshi did. |

CAN A STUDENT BE LIKE A SWORD? When a piece of iron ore is found it is full of different things known as impurities, these impurities weaken the iron, but through the process of forging the iron becomes steel and is transformed into magnificent work of art, the razor sharp sword. People can develop in much the same way. If someone takes a person under their wing and develops a skill through for instance repetitive training in a certain art, then that person can be honed into something as magnificent as a sword. This can only happen if the trainee is a willing subject and treats his / her training with respect and puts the work into their chosen art as a sword smith would put into his, iron to steel to sword!!!!! |
