GIRI: OBLIGATION
VOLUME 2
ISSUE 9
Newsletter date  April 2001

Do not think about winning; think about not losing.

F
unakoshi sensei as you must now be aware was a great thinker, he delved into all aspects of life as well as the martial way.

With the statement above if one thinks deeply about it you can understand what he meant and maybe recall someting in the past that you have done that relates to this issue.

There is a huge difference between wanting badly to win at all costs, and not alowing oneself to be beaten. If you think about the first statement and understand that to jump into something fool heartedly will only lead to recless destruction and defeat. The second part of the statement will foster common sense and prudent action.

Ultimately you respond in accordance to your opponents action.

GIRI: Obligation in this form may never truly be understood by the whole of the western world but I have trained with a true martial artist and the meaning of GIRI is always in my mind for him!!!!

Training with Safety in Mind

As you are all aware the training that we undertake can be varied in many aspects of the art of Shotokan, from Kihon to Kata and from combinations to Kumite.

No matter what we practice there is always an element of danger from injury if we do not take care in what we do and how we conduct ourselves.

I find that the main problems with potential injury comes from the lack of consideration for fellow students, therefor I cannot emphasise enough about the aspect of awareness (zanshin) when you are training. We have a large No. of students that normally train at the same time, so space becomes a problem when students run around when they are supposed to be practicing a technique.

Please be aware that the training is all part of building your repertoir of many techniques which invole the art of Shotokan. Do not mess arond when training!
THE DISPLAY FOR CONNOR RUMNEY

As you know on the 7th of April we put on a display of Shotokan for a young man who is suffering with Muscular Dystrophy, Connor Rumney. On befalf of Conner and his parents they would like to thank the Ryu and it's students for raising a grand total of £187 towards the purchase of a purpose built wheelchair for Connor.

Thanks to all who atended and I think the grand total in all for the days events reached nearly £3000
