DOGS HAVE MASTERS;
|

In what I refer to as my "former life" (but that's a whole 'nother story...) I was definitely a dog person. For some reason, my mother simply did not like cats and raised me to feel little affection for the creatures. I'm glad to say that, much in the same way I rebelled against just about every rule she tried to impose upon me, I also became a cat lover. Just to piss her off. ;) Although I like all kinds of animals, cats definitely hold a special place in my heart now. I've currently got 3 of the little angels and I'm lobbying my boyfriend to adopt more (I'll keep you posted on my progress.) Allow me to introduce: |

I admit it ... I'm a sucker when it comes to abandoned animals. I've owned purebred dogs, but there's something about a mutt that just breaks down all of my defenses. All I have to hear is, "Well, if I can't find a home for her, I guess I'll have to take her to the pound" and, voilà, I'm in violation of the pet deposit section of my lease again. |

When I was a little girl we had a wonderful dalmatian named - what else - Spotty. She was one of the last in a long line of dalmatians owned by my family. I'll post her photo as soon as I can find it. She was so well-trained. She knew the usual commands - sit, shake, lie down, etc. - but I vividly remember a special command that she had mastered: "WAIT." My mother would show her a piece of food, something yummy like steak, and say, "Wait." Mom would put the food down on the floor and repeat, "Wait." Then walk away, even leave the room. Spot would sit and stare at that tidbit as if she could will it to come to her! But she wouldn't move a muscle. As the seconds drew out into what must have felt to her like an eternity, Spotty would begin to whimper and get antsy. She would lie down, then sit back up... whimper, wag her tail. Mom would say, "Spotty...... wait." And that poor dog would whimper and wiggle her whole body as her frustration built. She looked like she was about to explode. But she would wait. And never ONCE did she take her eyes off that morsel of food calling her name. Finally, Mom would say, "Okay!" and in about .03 seconds the piece of food was history. |
