1977* Yuri Mazurok, the much praised Moscow baritone, and the most operatically Western of Adler’s Soviet imports, made a very striking Anckarstrom, the Renato of old. He seemed to be one of those rare modern descendants of old-time bel canto baritones like Giuseppe Danise who thought of themselves spiritually, in not literally, as tenors. The voice was huge, clean, brilliant, wit an almost tenor ring to it. It did no harm, either, that Mazurok’s acting was very dignified rather than flamboyant a la Russe. |

* Reviews from Arthur Bloomfield's 1922-1978 The San Francisco Opera. |
1999 * Possessing both strong theatrical instincts and a robust voice, baritone Sergei Leiferkus’s greatest limitation was his basic vocal quality. The limited, harsh tone served well enough in Count Anckarstrom’s moments of fury, but the complete lack of Italianate warmth and his monochromatic snarling tone wears quickly on the ear, despite the singer’s phrasing and the actor’s insight. His suitability in the Russian repertory has not crossed over successfully into this repertory./ Review |

2006: Far and away, the most "interesting" vocal performance came from Ambrogio Maestri, making his San Francisco debut as Anckarström (Renato). This mountain of a man has a big — if not a consistently beautiful — voice, which he produces effortlessly, but without much presence./ Review Side note: I thought he had plenty presence. |
