A quick lesson in the life of Shihad -in chronological order- (if that's possible) |
1988- Shihad are formed by two high school friends- Tom Larkin and Jon Toogood. -Phil Knight joins the band 1990- Gerald Dwyer picks the band up and manages them - They play support gigs for the like of Faith No More and Motorhead 1991- (August) Long serving bassist, Hamish Laing, leaves the band. He is replaced by Karl Kippenberger - First recorded work released. The "Devolve" EP hits top 20 on the charts. 1993- (July) Churn released. The first single, "I only said", reaches number 3 on the charts. 1994- (June) Killjoy released. 1995- They play the Big Day Out tour and then play the support slot on Faith No More's tour in February 1996- (January) Tragedy stuck when manager Gerald Dwyer was found dead, hours after watching the band play the Auckland Big Day Out. They subsequently missed the Brisbane leg to attend his funeral and then rejoined the tour in Sydney. - (Mid year) Before they recorded their new album, Shihad perform at the New Zealand Music and entertainment awards, winning awards for Best Group, Best Album (for Killjoy), Top International Recording Artist and Best Male Vocalist (for Jon). - (throughout the year) The finishing touches were being put on the new CD. - "Shihad" released to rave reviews by the critics. 1997- (January) Again Shihad play the Big Day Out tour, creating huge mosh pits all round. - (April) Support Tool on their tour - (September) "Shihad" gets Gold status in New Zealand - (Oct/Nov) Play the Livid festival in Brisbane. 1998- (Jan/Feb) Play the Homebake festival - (March) Toured with the Orientation tour, start demoing new material - (April) Win another 3 awards at the New Zealand Music and Entertainment Awards- Top Male Vocalist (for Jon again), Best Band, and Best Video (for "Home again") - (October) Tour with Grinspoon for 3 weeks - (November) The "Blue Light Disco" EP released and they embark on a tour of New Zealand, intorducing audiences to "Officer Gabba". - (December) Play 2 shows in Melbourne. 1999- (October) Release "The General Electric" in both New Zealand and Australia at the same time. It is raved by the critics to be their best album yet. - More tours around Australia and New Zealand 2000- (february) Support Filter on their Australian And New Zealand tours. - (March) Embark on another Australian tour with Magic Dirt and Pretty Violet Stain - (September) Pacifier tour of Australia - (November) General Electric tour of New Zealand. - (December) Last Australian tour for the year- The "Just Like Everybody Else" tour |
