| Fact |
| Domestic Violence is the most common and least reported crime. Domestic violence happens to everyone, regardless of race, culture, age, ability educational, or income levels. Every nine seconds a woman is beaten by her partner or spouse. One-half of all wifes are likely to be abused at some time in their married lives. Two in five female murder victims are killed by their husbands or partners. 40% of all women who are murdered die at the hands of their husbands or lovers. The majority of battered individuals have children who are hurt, both physically and or mentally, by the violence in their homes. A battering incident is rarely an isolated occurrence. Over time, wife beating usually escalates in severity and frequency. Domestic violence annually costs U.S, companies $3-5 billion in lost work time, increased health care costs, higher turnover, and lower productivity. 80% of the men in America's prisons were abused as children. Children and Elderly also suffer. Many children and elderly people will be abused by their families this year. |
