The Student Assistance
Program (SAP) at Sheldon High School and T.R. Smedberg
Middle School is committed to the development of the overall
wellness of students and staff by promoting and supporting a
healthy lifestyle aimed at enhancing student learning. The
goal of our SAP team is to provide a coordinated
comprehensive 7 - 12 system that effectively delivers
education, prevention, intervention, and support services
for students.

Program Components
Students Helping Students Program at Sheldon (formerly Conflict Management) - students are enrolled in the first period Peer Counseling/Leadership skills course. They will be primarily working as conflict managers and peer helpers, but will also be taking on leadership roles on campus through the "Kids Can' program, peer led smoking cessation classes, "Chips for Kids" toy drive and Peer-to-Peer mentoring. Conflict Management at
Smedberg - trains students in communication, decision making,
and problem solving skills. Students work with their peers
to resolve problems in area such as boyfriend/girlfriend
issues, peer relationship issues, problems with parents or
siblings, hostile environments, problems adjusting to a new
school and conflicts resulting from any/all of the above.

Students Reaching Out - a high school substance abuse/violence prevention program that provides outreach to fourth through eighth grade students at our feeder schools. Students are trained in age appropriate techniques for teaching elementary school students decision making and refusal skills, while also conveying topic specific information on drugs and gangs. Advisors: Chondra Schrech and Petra Pohl
Friday Night Live/Club Live - students from both schools volunteer to form a chapter that promotes a "no drug or alcohol use" message. This is done in a variety of ways such as: school dances, lunch time activities, assemblies and rallies. Conferences and county-wide activities are also included. Advisors: Yuri Penermon and Taigan Velo
LINK Crew and WEB Programs - the purpose of these two programs is to build connections between the upper and lower grade students in and effort to smooth the transition to a new school, as well as increasing student academic success. This is accomplished through orientation activities, as well as ongoing small group and structured activities. Advisors: Tracy Ramondini, Fern Wallace and Donna Motter
Peer Mentoring Program - the Friday Night Live and Club Live programs of the Sacramento County Office of Ed. Have received a grant to pilot a mentoring program in five Sacramento County schools. Smedberg and Sheldon have been selected to participate in this program. We began this program last year. Due to our success, the mentoring grant was funded for another year. Several Sheldon students from the Peer Counseling class have been selected to be mentors to students in Smedberg’s Opportunity class in need of positive role models. The students in the Opportunity class are striving to complete course requirements so they can become Sheldon students next year. The mentoring sessions will take place during first period one hour per week for ten weeks.

TUPE and PATFY Programs - these programs are designed to focus on the prevention, intervention and cessation of tobacco use amongst all members of the student body. This is accomplished through a variety of activities in Health classes, lunch time presentations, assemblies, and programs such as "Smokeless Saturdays" and the "I Quit" smoking cessation program and OCS intervention education programs.

Counseling Department Support Groups - the counseling department offers a variety of student support groups when the need becomes apparent on campus. Support groups focus on personal awareness and skill development in support of student academic and emotional growth. All group meetings are confidential. SASSI(Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory) - the SASSI is an assessment which is administered to students who have been identified as having a possible substance abuse problem. All members of the Smedberg/Sheldon Counseling Departments have been trained to administer the SASSI. This assessment is extremely beneficial in confronting the denial issues often associated with substance abuse for students and their parents, and can often assist in their initial step toward recovery. The SAP team is made up of all the advisors and counselors listed above. Administration is represented by Ramona Nelson. We are currently looking for community members who may be interested in working with these programs on either or both campuses. SAP Coordinator is Leanne Ward.
