Within the world of Aboriginal politics in Canada, there exists many different Organizations, most of which make claims which are the same as all the others. Sounds like politics everywhere doesn't it? Currently, there are three National Organizations which cater to Metis People: the Metis National Council, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples and the Canadian Metis Council. The MNC exists from Ontario to British Columbia, believing that Metis People do not exist East of Ontario. CAP exists in all Provinces and Territories, with a Provincial/Territorial Organization in each. It was the CAP, known then as the Native Council of Canada, who managed the coup of getting Metis People recognized in the Canadian Constitution as Aboriginal People. However, in 1985, with the passing of Bill C-31 in Parliament, their mandate changed to include not only Metis and Non-Status Indians, but off-reserve-Status as well. Confused yet? Imagine how we feel! The Canadian Metis Council was formerly part of Region 9 of the Metis Nation of Ontario, an affiliate of the MNC. Due to lack of support and a wish to actually serve and support their membership, they split with the MNO/MNC in 1998 and federally incorporated as the Canadian Metis Council. Their motto: strong local councils and communities, builds a strong Nation. We have , therefore, decided to join the CMC believing that being aligned with them, that our interests will best be served at the National Level. The We'kopekwitk Metis Council is also one of the founding Metis Communities to form the Confederacy of Nova Scotia Metis. By coming together as equals, no individual or Local stronger than another, we will be stronger as a group while maintaining our autonomy as individual Communities. For further information on the Confederacy, please go here (a new window will open). We also wholeheartedly support
