Who
We Are
The membership of
the Council is made up of people from all walks of life and backgrounds.
What has brought us together, is the common bond of being Métis,
a person of mixed Native and non-Native heritage. People with Mi'kmaq,
Wendat, Kanien'keha:ka, Eyou, Inuit, Dakota and other Native heritage.
And, of course, mixed with French, English, Irish, Scottish, African and
more.
As well, the membership
includes people who grew up as Aboriginal People and those who are only
recently discovering their family's rich cultural heritage. For many of
these latter individuals, it has been a struggle to throw off the old stereotypes
which plagued their older family members. The shame which was directed
their way as "half-breeds". Todays terminology has not advanced much, the
preferred word being "wannabee Indian".
The simple fact however,
is that our People are not "wannabee" anything, except human beings with
dignity and self-respect and the opportunity to be complete people.
We have come together to
share common concerns, not only for ourselves, but for our future generations.
There is a commonly heard quote amongst First Nation people, "that we must
look forward to the next 7 generations, and think about them, before we
do anything". When the Creator gave these instructions to our Native ancestors,
there was no question that ALL of our offspring were included, regardless
of the colour of their eyes, hair, or whether they carried an "Indian"
status card.
Therefore, not only will
we work toward the advancement of our Métis relations, but also
our First Nation relations, wherever they may live.
