Training Journal: March 6th, 2005 - 60 Minutes of intervals
Sunday, 35 degrees, cloudy w/snow showers (off course it started the minute I rolled out the door)
I was planning on XC skiing today, spending at least four hours on the trails, but Justin' face got in the way of that, no bother, I salvaged things with a hard ride. (10 minute warm up- a interval ladder, and a cool down) I realized on this trip a few things; a) how much I missed the bike, b) how much thinking I managed to get done on the bike- I figured out a huge problem today- one that will help with my current lesson at school, and c) how afraid I am of getting uncomfortable- the one thing I have to work on this year. I want to learn to push through that lactic acid build-up.
Did I eat well? well, I have to work on that too- though it was not too too bad.

March 7th - Monday 60 degress, cloudy    1 hour (17 miles of hills)
My ride was a rush against time but well worth it. I left the house with about an hour an 15 of light left and made it home a good 15min before the sunset. The ride was uneventful and felt pretty good. I concenttrated on keeping my cadence up and my heart rate at a moderate level for the duration. It worked pretty well, lost my focus for a bit, but not more than 5 or 10 minutes as I was really worried about the light.
Skated for an hour too afterwards, though here I think I fell apart, mental mush as they say. Practice did not go well at all, actually it sucked, and I was near tears and ready to leave the ice at one point. Funny, that happened at school today too, I wonder what is up.
My diet is normal, though I have been trying to cut out a bit of the junk.

Well, off to bed (too tired to think)

March 9, 2005   MAN IS IT COLD 15 degrees and WINDY

Skated tonight (yonkers- outdoors)- 1 hour of moderate laps - w/accelerations out of the turn. I was concentrating on technique but managed to get the heart rate up. I realized I don't like that feeling and tend to back off if I am not focused. So I really tried to stay in range without letting up. My leg is still really sore on the ice, feels better on the bike.
I ate too much today as well (not necessarily calorie wise, but junk)
I am trying to figure out my w/o for tomorrow - I think I will go for a run after my meeting- hopefully my leg can handle it.

March 11     two hours moving the skating mats from Brewster to Newburgh (maybe 45 minutes of lifting)

March 12     ICETIME - Its an ICE RINK WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Seven hours on skates chasing blocks and pouring water...and 3 minutes of skating at race pace just to get blood flow back...Ok this doesn't sound like much, but you try standing on those thin blades for hours, bending down every 5 minutes or so to poour water on the track, moving the blocks, then chasing them and replacing them before getting creamed by the pack. (lots of adrenanline here- NYS Championships and my kids  are skating)

March 14 - Rink temp

Skated 1 full hour - pretty moderate stuff, had fun , pigged out afterwards.

March 15 - 45 Degrees- Sunny

45 minute ride with Bud at an easy pace - some hills - beautiful day lots of training talk about our own endeavors (including his cross state quest) - need to train for that 12 hour race -then spin off into days of centuries. Psyched about it all- but so out of shape.
Ate well- so far.

March 16 and 17 - I have a serious cold coming on- head stuffed, can't breath, feel like I have no energy - going to give it a few days!  No time to be sick at work so I need to reel things in a bit. My diet has been fine, no over eating or eating the wrong things.

March 19- sunny 45 degrees
Just a short quick 11 mile ride. Concentration is on cadence (working on keeping my pedals going and not worrying about speed) I tried to spend at least 45 minutes on the bike so I made sure to pedal in low gears the whole way. My focus on cadence was due to the fact that I tend to be a gear masher. I know that I can go faster and farther if I learn to spin. This was purely a spinning session.

March 20- raining and 34

Run/walk for 45 minutes - started this workout as a run, but have found my knees and ankle are still not up to snuff. I ran for all of 20 minutes, walked briskly for the rest of the 45. The pain was tremendous under the patella on the left knee and the right leg was tight with pain under the foot and behind the knee. Time to see the orthopedic again.

March 22- Sunny 56
SUPER HAPPY FUN HILL CLIMBING REPEAT HOUR!!! (almost)
The first one of this year- managed 45 minutes before it got dark enough that I could not see the deer I almost ran into, so I quit.  I managed 5 times up the 12%  climb and 4 times up the 7%  climb no bad for the first day trying to work on AnT. I also managed a few other things ... I kept my heart rate consistant each time (down to resting on recovery and up to 85% on climbs)- and Yes BUD, I stayed in the saddle!
This is a problem I have had since I tore my periformis two years ago- I haven't been able to climb w/o getting out of the saddle. Is that bad? well, technically yes, its a waste of energy. My goal is to climb both fast and efficiently so cadence up and butt back.
My knees? well, they hurt and twinged a bit on the first two accents, but I spon a bit between the next climb (5 min) and had no real complaints afterward- calf is tight, but we'll see what happens later- hopefully no bruising. Arnica is great stuff.

Have had a few really stressful days, excercising is helping, though it is a chore to get out there.
