Description of program: The new Garrett-Evangelical Ph.D. program builds on the tradition of the joint Garrett/Northwestern program, which has been in existence since the 1930s. The program is part of the mission of Garrett-Evangelical and supplements schoolÕs commitment to preparation for ministry. The program prepares persons for teaching and research in theological seminaries and departments of religion in colleges and universities and for leadership in the church. While the program is centered at Garrett-Evangelical, we draw on faculty and library resources at Northwestern University, other approved universities, and the Association of Chicago Theological Schools (ACTS). The purpose of this program is to develop competencies in the knowledge of the theories and practices of healing and care in church and society. The history of this field encompasses the theological foundations of healing and care, pastoral theology, pastoral psychology, psychology of religion, and the theories and practices of pastoral counseling and psychotherapy. This degree trains persons for leadership in the church's task of equipping the whole people of God for the ministry of pastoral care and counseling and providing leadership in Christ's ministry of personal and society transformation. Faculty and faculty interests: David Hogue, James Poling, and Lallene Rector. Admissions requirements: Completion of an M.Div., MCE, M.T.S. or MA in theological studies or equivalent.
