This booklet was created as a result of a conversation at the annual Society for Pastoral Theology (SPT) in June 1999 among faculty from various graduate programs. Its goal is to provide introductory information about doctoral study (Ph.D. and Th.D) in the area of religion and personality and pastoral theology in the United States. The booklet consists of succinct statements submitted by faculty from each institution which describe their program and curriculum, admissions requirements, clinical components, duration and size of the program, faculty, cost and financial aid, graduate placement, and contact persons. We hope that faculty, prospective students, and institutions of higher education in religion will benefit from the enhanced understanding of the similarities and differences of various programs of study in the field of religion and personality provided by this booklet. All graduate programs share a common commitment to critical engagement of behavioral and social sciences with theological and biblical resources and to rigorous engagement with pastoral practice. Programs vary in terms of the extent of their required clinical components, the amount of interdisciplinary academic work in other cognate fields such as psychology, the size of the program, funding, and other features. This guide should help prospective students make better choices for future study. We also hope that it will strengthen the field by encouraging faculty and institutions to build on their unique contributions and to deepen their commonalities within the study of religion and theology.
