THE NAME: SPOIL <spoyl>
LITERAL MEANING:The properties that can be taken in the aftermath of war; to rot.
From the meaning, it is easy to surmise that the band derived its name... from just literally browsing through the dictionary... for a one word, one syllable name that would probably have a dramatic meaning to the literate. It is believed that names grow on people. and in this case, the band. And it did, as the band's current line-up might suggest, they are the spoils of war, as remnants of former bands. From another point of view, the members can be spoilers as well, of what?, you figure it out. :}
HISTORY: FROM BEGGINING TO END
The band Spoil came into existence in the first semester of the year 2000, as the result of Morris and Jeremy's desire to start a band, playing unplayable songs from incubus, considering the noisy underground scene of today. They came accross Daniel a guitarist who had just left his former band Stickshift, now known as Stickshit, and Wilmer, a talented metal drummer. Cheezdog, a versatile bassist with his many bands, filled in the bass lines.
With good response from a crowd of underground slam-dancing junkies, the band played on for half a year. But priorities changed as some members became less and less unable to keep with the bands schedules. The drummer had to move to a new phase as he was about to become a father and the bassist became unable to juggle his many bands. Thus, the remaining members, still bent on playing a booked gig, decided to do an acoustic session amidst the deafening underground noise.
Tubal at the time was a bassist for 3rdfinger and he had the only decent acoustic guitar. When the remaining members asked to borrow the guitar for the gig, they ended up playing him and his drummer brother sig2x. It was a one-gig, no-practice, session, but the response from the crowd lifted their spirits and a decision for permanence was established.
Still playing in their original band 3rdfinger, the new members carried on with the name Spoil. Their connection with the band became deeper as their rosponse from the crowd became better, thus, the remaining members of 3rdfinger were carried over to Spoil. The new combination played for a while, but the instruments became unfavorable for the sound as 3rdfinger covered heavy stuff from Korn, Deftones and Greyhounds. A difficult decision had to be made and 3rdfinger had to be let go.
With its current line-up, Morris as vocalist, Daniel as guitarist, Tubal and Sig2x as bass and drums respectively and Jeremy as percussionist, the band had good future. They decided to join the Nu107 Rock Assembly 2000 to test their newfound sound. With a week to compose and record their first composition, schedules became tense. With two months to wait for results as their entry was submitted on time and made it to the finals, the new wbsite was under construction. Finally the moment of success came for the band as they bagged the top spot of the competition. Their win made the members truer and more dedicated to the band's sound and cause that they became confident and intent in making their own music through compositions.
Now with four recorded songs, and one on the way, the band has proven strong to the cause of having and making true, original and good music. Often borrowing talents such as Ryan and Abe of of the former Glitch, for raps and scratches respectively, to improve the sound that is now known as Spoil. Thus the band played on.. |
