Polar bears are the largest land carnivore in the world being 2 times the size of a lion or tiger. They are closely related to Brown Bears, so much in fact that they are able to produce viable hybrids with them. There are estimated 20,000-25000 polar bears in the wild. The Polar Bear is the most voracious of the bear family as nearly all of its calories come from marine mammals. The most common food for the Polar Bears is seals, which they hunt by using their extremely acute sense of smell and locating the seals dens. Then the Polar Bears proceed to stomp on to get to the seal and eat it. They also wait by seal breathing holes and when a seal pops up they drag it out of the hole then stomp on its head thus killing it. The biggest threat to Polar Bear survival is global warming, as the ice sheets polar bears use to hunt are getting smaller and smaller each year. Some people are predicting that in 100 years the polar bear will go extinct. The Asiatic Black Bear is a close relative of the North American Black bear. The Asiatic Black Bear has a wide range of habitat from east to west Asia. They can be found in the hilly and mountainous parts of East and South Asia. The Asiatic Black Bear is smaller in size then The Brown Bear it shares its territory with but it does have an edge over it. It can climb trees to get to the fruit and berries on top of trees. It does also periodically consume meat |
