Brown, Panda, and Sloth Bears | |||||||||||||||||
Brown Bears live primarily in Russia, U.S., and Canada. Brown Bears are very powerful as they can kill a full grown buffalo with one blow to the neck. There are over 200,000 Brown Bears in the world. Some of their habitats are shrinking but for the most part their population levels are stable. Female Brown Bears reach sexually maturity between 5-7; males take longer to mate as they need to get big and strong to compete with the males for the rights to mate. Brown Bears get 90% of there energy from vegetable matter. Panda Bears are practically herbivores as they get 99% of their food from bamboo. Since they still have the digestive track of a predator they can’t digest cellulose very efficiently thus they always have to have there digestive track full in order to the nutrients they need. Panda Bears are endangered with less then 2000 of them in the wild and around 200 in captivity. Panda Bears are growing in numbers. Panda Bears will occasionally eat other things besides bamboo such as bananas and eggs. Sloth Bears live around Tibet, India and Sri Lanka. They do not hibernate because of their warm natural environment. They typically give birth to 2 young after a 7 month pregnancy. |
