Scrying is a divination method which involves watching and observing a specific medium with an intention to see visions or representations of possibilities. Images may not always be seen but is more sensed. It works by combining the cues received from the medium and combining them with the images which are presented in the minds eye. Scrying has been used in many cultures as a means of divining the past, present, or future. It is also known as crystal gazing but this is incorrect as there are many other ways to scry other than by using crystals.

Crystal Scrying (geomancy) - the most well known method. Crystal scrying can be traced back to as far as the Incas. A shiny black stone is often used as it is thought that this is the easiest to see images in. this is thought to have originated in South America.

Smoke Scrying (aeromancy) - this is most popularly carried out by taking a favourite incense and burning it till the smoke is flowing naturally and then watching and interpreting the images you see, hear, smell and feel. Another way of carrying out aeromancy is through the observation of atmospheric conditions.

Fire Scrying (pyromancy) - this type of scrying takes time to get used to and involves watching the flame of a candle and asking questions in your mind and waiting for images to appear. It can take time to practice this until the images appear clearly. It can be used to observe the past, present and future and often will give the most accurate information.

Water Scrying (hydromancy)
- Water scrying is carried out using water in a bowl, ink is sometimes added to the water to make it easier to see the images. Larger images will manifest sooner than smaller images. Ink scrying was carried out in Egypt by placing ink into the palm of the hand but water scrying itself is thought to have originated from the Zulus and Siberians. It is supposedly the easiest form of scrying to learn but the information given can be inaccurate and easily misinterpreted.

Mirror Scrying (catoptromancy) - A scrying mirror is a black mirror usually made from black obsidian (misconceived as a stone but is actually a form of glass). Scrying in a mirror is the hardest and most difficult to get results from when starting out however it can be practiced and will give the most depth as it can be used to summon and communicate with ancient spirits and ancestors who are also able to then show scenes and images. Mirror scrying originated from the Ancient Greeks and became more popular in England during the Middle Ages.
