May 5-8
Tim, Craig and I met four of the Mader brothers (Charlie, Tom, Fox and Ron) at Houghton Lake in Michigan for a few days of fishing. The water temp was around 50 degrees on the first day and by the last afternoon it climbed into the mid 50’s in the shallows. We had gentle breezes and mild weather for the three and a half days of fishing. The first day the fishing was spotty with a few walleye caught and an occasional largemouth bass. By the weekend the water temps climbed towards the mid 50’s and the largemouth bite picked up and we also started to catch a few crappies. On Sunday the smallmouth seemed to be on the prowl in the shallows. Most of the fish were caught on the black marabou and some were caught on wacky worm style baits, tubes, grubs and shallow running stick baits. The seven of us caught and cleaned 21 walleye and about a dozen nice size crappies for the trip. We had our usual steak dinner on Saturday and a fish fry on Sunday. Tim was declared “King Dog” for catching two big Dogfish (Bowfin) during the trip! |

June 3-10, 2005
Our first trip of the year to Lake St. Clair found the seven of us hitting it just right. Our party included me, Tim, Dan, Jeff, Heavy, Al Bertke and a young protégé of his, Steve Ettingger. Steve E. is one of Al’s students who earned the trip by winning his schools fishing contest. Al teaches at two junior highs in Beavercreek and has organized a number of students in each school to participate in a fishing competition on some of the local ponds in the area. The weather was hot (85-90) and breezy nearly everyday. The water temps were in the mid to upper70’s. All species of fish were biting. We caught perch, walleyes, rock bass and hundreds of smallmouth bass which we released. I even had a muskie grab a small bass that I was reeling in and it swam off with it for about 30 yards before it let the bass go. Fish were caught on senkos, tubes, flukes, rattle traps, and spinnerbaits. Just about anything you had in your tacklebox caught fish. Most fish were caught in 12-13 foot of water. It was one of our best trips ever! |
