June 19-21, 2005 Here is a fishing report from my Nephew John… The Sandbar On Fathers Day my Uncle Tim and my Dad took me to Lake Saint Clair for two and a half days of fishing. The first trip out from 11:30-4:00 we caught 19 smallmouth bass. Later on in the evening we caught 10 smallmouth from 6.30-9.00. On Monday we only caught 8 fish in the morning from 9:00-1:30. Then from 6:00-9:15 we caught 51 smallmouth, 10 by Grassy Island and 41 at the Sandbar. It seemed like every other cast we would catch a fish at the Sandbar. On Tuesday we fished the Kemba hole and the Simms hole. We caught 38 smallmouth from 8:00-2:00. Then Tuesday night, our last time out, we hit the Sandbar again and caught 39 more smallmouth from 6:00-8:30. The trip was great and our overall total catch was 165 fish. All the smallmouth were released. I had a great time. John Corley |

July 19-21
Al Bertke, Tim and I went up to Lake Erie for a few days of smallmouth fishing. We fished out of Al’s Lund and stayed in the Port Clinton area. Each day was hot and the winds were calm. The first afternoon we fished around the east side of Kelley’s Island and managed only to catch a half dozen smallies and twice as many sheephead. The next day we trailered over to Vermillion and fished the area from the breakwall west towards Huron. We located some 14-16 foot humps about ¼ to ½ mile from shore that my brother-in-law found and marked on his GPS on a previous trip. We marked a lot of baitfish in the area and we caught around 25 smallmouth on several different types of lures. Some were caught using the dropshot rig while others were caught on tubes, soft jerk baits rigged with jig heads. The water was clear and there was an algae bloom on the lake’s surface. After dark we had some strong thunderstorms move through the area. By daybreak the rains quit and we decided to go back to Vermillion again. This time we could not find hardly any baitfish and there was any evidence of the algae bloom. We only caught a few fish and headed home by early afternoon to beat the heat and humidity. It was a short trip but we learned a lot about using the dropshot rig and found new spots to fish. Maybe will get back up there in the fall to fish for the big ones that show up in the same area… |
