Anora Sheridan and Matthew Fox
Honora "Anora" Sheridan
was born in Co. Tipperary, Ireland November 1, 1843. She died September 15, 1930 in
Pittsford, Vermont, at 86 years of age. She was buried on September 18, 1930 in St.
Alphonsus Cemetery Pittsford, VT. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate a photo of
Anora. Please email me if you know if a picture of
her still exists.
Anora married Matthew Fox (click photo at left)
in Rutland, Vermont, on October 17, 1870 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Matthew was born
in Co. Meath, Ireland March 1831. He was the son of Daniel Fox and Bridget Kavanaugh.
Matthew died April 27, 1904 in Pittsford, Vermont, at 75 years of age. He is buried in St.
Alphonsus Cemetery Pittsford, VT. Matthew's occupation: Farmer. Anora and Matthew lived in
Chittenden Vermont until 1898. They then moved to Corn Hill in Pittsford Vermont.
Matthew Fox was married twice. His first wife
was Frances Atwood (1835-1868). Matthew and Frances were married in September 29, 1857 at
Rockingham, Vermont. Frances died 1868 in Chittenden, Vermont; cause of death is listed as
childbirth. But I was unable to locate a Fox baby born at that time.
Berwick Hotel in Rutland
Before her marriage, Anora worked as a domestic
servant at the farm of Sherman Smith in Castleton, Vermont. She then worked as a pastry
cook at the Berwick Hotel in Rutland. The Berwick, located on the northwest corner of
Center and Wales St., was built in 1868. The hotel was destroyed in a fire in 1973. (click

MATTHEW FOX KILLED
Pittsford Man thrown From Carriage and Fatally Injured Matthew Fox, who lives on the
Rutland road, was thrown from his carriage while returning from church about 11 o'clock
Wednesday morning and died from his injuries shortly after 12 o'clock this morning. The
horse which Mr. Fox was driving became frightened at a gasoline engine at the house of
George Bates, and ran into a carriage occupied by Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Gagnon and son. Mr.
and Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Gagnon and son were thrown out, but none of them, except Mr. Fox,
were seriously injured. Mr. Fox was immediately picked up and carried to his home, where
he died this morning of internal injuries.
He was about 79 years of age. Besides his wife he leaves seven children.

The funeral of Mathew Fox, who died Thursday morning from injuries received Wednesday by
being thrown from his carriage, will be held at St. Alphonsus church next Saturday morning
at 9 o'clock.

PITTSFORD
The funeral of Matthew Fox, who died Thursday as a result of injuries received in a
carriage accident, was held at the St. Alphonsus church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning.
Rev. J. M. Brown, officiated. The bearers were Joseph B. Carrigan, John McCormick, Patrick
Murthur, James E. Tennian, William H. Hale and Michael Connolly. A large number from out
of town were present. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. Mr. Fox died in his
80th year. Besides a wife he leaves seven children, Charles, William, Dela and Emma Fox of
this place and Mrs. James Riley and Edward Fox of Rutland and Daniel Fox of Montpelier.
