The Carey Family

John Sheridan married Catherine Carey, age 16, in Castletown, Co Tipperary, Ireland, on November 1, 1836. Catherine was born in 1820 Ballycarridoge, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. Both the townlands of Castletown and Ballcarridoge are in the parish of Castletown-arra.

Catherine was the daughter of James Carey; her mother's name is unknown at this time. The father's name is based upon a death record and could have been recorded incorrectly. Catherine died April 1900 in Rutland, Vermont, at 79 years of age. She is buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Rutland Vermont.  To read about Catherine's children please click here.

Based upon the following facts, Lynn Carey Grice and I believe that our Carey families are related.

• Patrick Carey and his wife Bridget Gallagher (see #1 below) lived in Rutland, close to Catherine Carey Sheridan.
• Bridget Sheridan, daughter of Catherine and John Sheridan, was godparent to Patrick and Bridget Carey's daughter Mary.
• Both families attended the same church, St Peter's in Rutland.
• Lynn's Careys left Ireland about the same time Catherine married John (1836), which would explain why Catherine didn't immigrate with them.
