W.I.B. "Bill" Crealock We had the extreme pleasure to meet the legend himself (and his lovely wife) the year we bought Silent Sun. He was speaking at the Pacific SeacraftRendezvous and we were determined to make it. We worked hard for several months and just barely made it! Sadly, Gentleman Bill didn't do much dock walking but he did remember many details regarding the commisioning of Silent Sun. He even sat at our table for dinner one night and graciously answered the myriad questions Rob lobbed at him! |
About Silent Sun |
"The boat is elegant and sleek with a very sweet sheer, a fine bow made graceful with slight spooning and a generous overhang, and a light canoe stern that manages to retain much reserve bouyancy without suffering from the droopy elephant-butt look that many canoe sterns have." - Ferenc Mate, Best Boats To Buy Or Build |
Silent Sun's story Silent Sun has a very special heritage. She was built in 1979, the year after the original builder, Cruising Consultants, went out of business and the year before Pacific Seacraft began building them. The first owner, a doctor from Houston knew a fellow that had a Cruising Consultant's version and fell in love. He tracked down WIB Crealock and arranged to have his very own Crealock 37 custom built. Alajuela Yachts laid up the hull and deck while Westerly Yachts finished it with real teak furniture - no fiberglass liners here! After sailing her to Mexico several times, the doctor unexpectedly had other priorities thrust upon him and was unable to take care of Silent Sun as he once had. There she sat in the hot Texas sun for 13 years until LaDonna noticed a posting on the Cruising World Bulletin Board for a Crealock 37 for sale. Rob called the doctor's nephew immediately and after a few quick questions ("Is she on the bottom? Any big holes?") committed to buying her sight unseen. We had been looking for "the" boat for some time and this looked to be the one! We've spent the past few years upgrading her, piece by piece. We still have a ways to go to get her "bristol" but there's progress every day (or so). We won't let that stop our plans though. Go simple, go small, go now! |

What does "Silent Sun" mean? Silent Sun is an unusual name for a boat, one we had never seen before. The doctor who had her commissioned had an affinity for the Walt Whitman poem "Give Me The Splendid, Silent Sun". When we bought her, his only request was that we not change the name. His story is so touching that we were happy to comply. Click here to read the entire poem. |
